Let me introduce myself.  I am past middle-age by about 10 years...and have been a rockhound most of my adult life.  Was a member of the Mid-Georgia Gem and Mineral Society for a few years and also the club in Charlotte.  I enjoy exploring new areas and finding what nature has to offer.  I have a very large collection of various minerals and agates.  I really have a soft spot for the colorful agates!  I would like to know more about the collecting areas around Wake County.  I also like to kayak; which comes in handy sometimes with this hobby...

Welcome to the RHL JimMc! Looks like you were bit by the bug early on.  Glad to have another experience rock hound join us.  Agates are among the worlds most beautiful silicate rocks out there so I can easily understand why you like them.  Wake County isn't known for colorful agates but we do find them in House Creek.  They tend to be yellow to orange and brown in color.  But if you're lucky you can sometimes find bright red bands running through it.  Years and years of creek crawling adventurers have dwindled the amount you can find there but after a big creek stirring storm more pieces can appear.  Well, hope to see some of your finds posted here soon!

Welcome to the Board, Jim! Glad you found us.
Yes, a lot of us rockhounds turn to agate as we get older. Cheesy
There is no shortage of places to kayak in this beautiful state but when the water gets low enough I think Falls Lake is one of the best for exposing interesting geology. I always enjoy taking a look at that area and will be keeping an eye on the levels over the next couple of months.

Thanks Joe,
I paddled around the Upper Barton ramp the other day and saw many quartz boulders, though nothing interesting.  Also saw a Northern Water snake attacking a catfish that had washed up on the rocks.  I took a neat video of the episode, but it probably would not be OK to post a nature video on a rock forum...LOL!

No kidding, Upper Barton! One of my favorite places to go.
I did a field trip report of my last paddle there.
Check it out when you got the time.

We'll have to go for a paddle sometime. If the lake would drop another couple feet it would be perfect.

Wow...that would be great!  Let me know when and I will be there.  Mornings or weekend.  I work 2nd shift on weekdays.  I like that report that you did.  I was walking some of the shoreline but I don't think that I have a good eye for those flaked items...

Welcome, Jim.  You can post your nature video to General Board, Nature's gifts (pinned subject at top).
