Trip to Neuse River at Goldsboro

This locale is known for lignite and occasionally some amber.  I did not find any amber even though I busted up a bunch of lignite trying to find some...  Did find some fingers of iron pyrite which could be petrified wood branches.  Brought home some of the lignite, but it just looks like some big pieces of charcoal.   Also found some pieces that could be graphite.

Here are more pics showing the Neuse River Cutoff in Goldsboro and some of the large lignite logs.

I've never found any of the amber either, Jim. It looks like you timed
it right and the water level was low enough for you.
Thanks for the pics!

Yeah...I probably will not be going back; but, it was good to check it out anyhow.

Yes, you have been doing a good job of getting to all the "points of interest" around here. Well Done!
I would go back if I was with someone that has actually found some amber before and knows what to look for.
And some of the pyrite/marcasite formations in the lignite are pretty cool.
I don't know anything about the mass of fossils all stuck together in the bottom of the cut?

Keep on huntin'. Wink

Thanks for the report.  I had read about the locality, the lignite and amber, in old literature but never seen good photos.

An interesting and different, to me, type locality.

A couple of more pics of those Petrified twigs...I guess I could call them "ironwood" since it is some type of iron mineral that replaced the wood.  (I cut the bases so that I could stand them up).
