Jade or Nepherite

So I'm pretty sure I found a piece of Jade or Nepherite. Wasn't expecting to find this laying in a creek bed where a lot of sedimentary rocks and other things are found but there is a mountain with serpentine nearby where the creek originates from. The color is more apple green in person. What's the difference between Jade and Nepherite? And What's the best way to tell them apart? Let me know what you guys think.

Hey Wailele, Sorry about this late response.
That's a real pretty chunck of a green rock! It looks like good material.
I couldn't tell you if it was jade or nephrite. I think that's a hard thing to determine. Might come down to chemistry......and it's good to remember that jadeite and nephrite are both jade.
But, I think a hardness test would tell a lot to whether it is jade or nephrite, serpentine, or a chrysoprase. A sharp piece or point of quartz crystal will scratch serpentine, barely scratch jade/nephrite, and won't noticeably scratch chrysoprase. If you're still wondering if it's jade or not.
That's definitely something to keep your eye out for!
Thanks for the pictures. Smiley

Thanks Joe. I figured I ask in hopes that there was some kind of secret to distinguish the two. I borrowed a crystal from a friend and it hardly left a mark. I'm leaning more towards it being jade.
