Schorl or black rutile?

From the cemetery --

The "V" twinning that can be seen on the top edge of the crystal makes me think rutile.

Extraordinary picture of the "V-twinning", Scott!
I have never seen that before. Very interesting.
I have to agree that it looks most like rutile, but is there something more going on there? Our missing Brookite? Just wondering.
Either or, a fantastic picture!

Here's one from the Cemetery that I "borrowed" from Josh.
The large black mass on this piece is what we have typically been calling schorl, and it may be. I cannot see any definite characteristics to say for sure. But a closer look at the small area of black at the top of the piece shows the reticulation of rutile underneath. Which poses the question: are these two areas of black different minerals?
The first picture is of the whole piece. Second is a close-up of the large black area. (Please excuse the hairs.) Last three pictures are of the smaller area.

And one more piece from the Cem, also borrowed from Josh.
I am "guessing" this is also black rutile. First two pics are one side of crystal, last two pics are the other side.

Oh yeah, that first one is weird! Huh
Thanks for all the great pics. I see you have been doing some searching!
I have been noticing that alot of the crystals look like "layers" welded together. Like in the 3rd to last pic above, it looks like each layer has it's own termination. The 5th from last pic above is a fantastic close-up of another example of layered crystal?
And, again, that first one is something else? Wink

My guess is that the black blocky crystals are schorl, and the long, reddish acicular crystals are rutile.  I've seen blocky schorl from Hiddenite that looked very similar.

Thanks for the input, Dennis. And yes, that is what we have always assumed as well.
But, now, with the possible presence of "black" rutile we are looking at the "schorl" much closer.
Is it all schorl? It could very well be, but there are inconsistencies.
Could some of it be Black Rutile? And the "layering" I see in many of the crystals reminds me more of Ilmenite? And there are other possibilities.
Hopefully, eventually, there will be several correct answers identified. Smiley
I will try and find some pics of the schorl from Hiddenite, and try and find my own self collected pieces, for comparison. Good idea!
I have been looking at many pics on Mindat lately for comparisons.
Here are two pics from Mindat. The first is a stunning complicated schorl. The second pic, also from Brazil, I found under Ilmenite on Mindat and thought closely represented what we are finding.
And did you know there is Red Schorl in Hungary?

It may be all schorl but may as well put in a couple Mindat pics of Ilmenite, while I'm at it.

Schorl from Hiddenite. Definitely for consideration.
Mindat, Schorl, page 26,
https://www.mindat.org/photo-1128.html
https://www.mindat.org/photo-4332.html

And this one is starting to look more like what we have.
https://www.mindat.org/photo-15193.html

I have always tried to avoid trying to identify all the black minerals we see around here because they all look alike. They're all Black!
First it was all Hematite, now, it seems, it's all Schorl! Very confusing stuff. I just can't help but feel there is some titanium influence in atleast some of what we are finding.
Oh well, keep diggin'! Smiley
