Inspired by Scott's hematite specimen, I dug out my hematite specimens from Graves.
When I rinsed them off with water, they turned black...tarnished instantly. Some crystals were already dark, but some were bright and shiny.
I plan to take pics when I have a sunny day....maybe tomorrow.
Has anyone experienced something like this?
I also had kyanite with pyrite in the same box. Would the pyrite darken the hematite?
Again, some were black when found, but some were shiny metallic silver color.
You can see the silver color showing through the black in some spots.
Is there a way to polish hematite?

For some Graves Mountain weirdness..
here are some terrible pics of the hematite crystals. They are the flat blades.
The area they came from was a decaying pyrophyllite with seams of the black hematite blades like the biscuit in back right of pic. Some of the bigger crystals were loose. Some of the pyrophyllite was still crystalized.
The pyrite epimorphs/pseudomorphs were in the mix. They seem to be replaced on the inside with hematite with some botryoidal formation, and some the regular crunchy black Graves coating.
And upon recent examination it seems there was some rutile in the mix with the hematite.  Should have looked at these earlier than now as they were collected in Jan of 2013. I am sure the location is still there since it was a weird spot to collect in: unstable and sort of hanging off the top of a pretty high spot. And if nobody else has located it...I am going to say I discovered this spot. No one had been digging there before me. 
What I assumed was a massive chunk of hematite is a chunk of rutile with some crystal faces (second pic, middle front)
The pyrite was just weird and neat and the hematite crystals are too; they are heavy and have blue and green color on the coating of black. The last pic is a close up of they pyrite. Big one in back is two big pyrites in the pyrophyllite and close ups of the insides of the pyrite. One has a little blade of hematite in the center.
All of this is much more interesting in person. And even more interesting now that I see the rutile in the hematite.
