Colorado School of Mines Museum

Getting to spend a day in the Mineral Museum at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado has been on the "Wish" list for many years so it was very nice to get the opportunity this past July.
I have been fairly "dreading" the chore of going back through and sorting and editing the 430 pictures I took that day visiting the campus and museum, but, now that the gauntlet has been opened, I've been enjoying it, and I hope you enjoy some of it, too. Smiley

The school has a beautiful historic campus nestled in a basin of the very mountains that provide a lot of their classroom fieldwork.
Here's a couple pics from campus and then walking up to the museum entrance. The large white rock outside the entrance is a big piece of the world famous marble from Marble, Colorado. One of the "purest" marbles in the world.

All Right, Folks. This is going to be a lot of pictures.
All pictures were taken through the glass of the display cases with my Nikon CoolPix point and shoot. So angle and light options were limited. I must say, as I took more pictures, I gradually became aware of how perfectly they had every specimen displayed. The very best angle to the front every time.
I am going to be putting the pictures into "sections" as much as possible. Here are a couple sample pics;

The first section is a few Quartz specimens for Scott. Smiley
I had to include a couple pictures of the first specimen because of the way they had the lighting.

Section 2 has got to be a few Beryls for Dennis. Smiley
Since we're in Colorado, let's start with the Aquas!

Section 3 are some specimens that are Near and Dear, as the sign in the first picture explains.
I'm am excluding fluorite, for the most part, from this section. There are so many fantastic fluorite specimens that they will be in a section of their own.

Great photos, Joe.  Thanks for including beryl pics for me.  Unfortunately, they mislabeled the NC emerald.  Yes, it's from Hiddenite, but not the Spruce Pine District, Mitchell Co., NC!

And a little Lapidary Display Interlude. Smiley
It was interesting to me how similar the slab of Scenic Jasper in the upper right hand corner of the first picture was to the slabs I have. The second picture is of my unpolished slab. It could've been the other end of the same rock! Wink

HA! Very interesting, Dennis! That didn't even register with me. I just assumed they got "Hiddenite" right.
Speaking of "errors" in the Emerald section. Look at the "beryl" on the far right of this picture.
And I'm going to be coming back to Brazil briefly.

Joe,

I noticed the similar color of the two specimens last night.  Very interesting.  I do know that many greenish to greenish blue beryls have iron as the main coloring agent.  I wonder if that Brazilian specimen had been analyzed.  As we know, true emeralds are green due to chromium or vanadium.

Thanks, Dennis. I was wondering the same thing. Since the beryl is pretty obviously green, atleast to me, I was wondering how they could make such an obvious error? Maybe it isn't?
But good eye on the Hiddenite label. I looked right at it and read it and it just didn't register. Tongue
One last point of interest on the Emeralds.
This is not the place to go into the similarities between Brazilian and Crabtree Emerald Mine material, but there are many. From the pegmatite matrix cabochon material to the emeralds, it would make a good thread some time.
Anyway, I thought this a good example.
First pic from the CSM Museum and the second my find from the Crabtree.

Oh yes, FYI, upcoming "sections" will be Fluorite, Colorado and vicinity, International Misc., Gold and Silver, and Rare Earth minerals.
