Galena - Missouri's State Mineral

Good late evening! Smiley

Here are some pics of Galena - found in Southwest Missouri in Lawrence County.

Here is some info on this mineral.  Please correct me if I am wrong.

Galena is the most common mineral containing lead, very metallic in appearance with a cubic growth.  Some impurities commonly found in Galena are Silver and Bismuth.
Galena also tarnishes when exposed to air for periods of time.

Although the most striking features are its Metallic luster, Striking Cleavage, and extreme heaviness - or density.  The one specimen is just about exactly 7/8 each side.  It is amazingly awkward to pick up because it seems for it's size, I could only really compare it to the weight of a rock 5-6 times it's size, and it's even more awkward to try to describe the feel of the density on top of the heaviness. - but strangely it is extremely brittle.  If you happen to squeeze it will fracture very easily.  Drop it on the floor and you can expect to have a nice scattered mess of tiny metallic shards or layers of Galena all over. Smiley

Very nice classic looking piece of Galena, Daniegirl !
Thank you for the pictures and the report on the mineral. I hope this is a recent find because that means you've been out in the field hunting rocks!
You know, Danie, if you are able to find a lot of Galena in your area you can use it to trade with people for rocks that they have a lot of in their area. It's probably the best way to grow your collection and get nice specimens that are hard or impossible to find in your area. Keep the best ones for yourself!
Unfortunately, mailing Galena will be more expensive because it's so HEAVY! Shocked

Very nice specimens Daniegirl!  I too am curious if you collected these yourself. You provided a very good description of it. Thanks for the pictures and write up.

Sorry I have been away for a while Smiley hoping to be back now for some time.  Yes, Scott, I did find these while I was camping. I wasn't even hunting at the time (but I have an auto-seek feature in my vision that never stops looking for unusual things)  What I had found was actually actually quite larger than what you see here, but at the time I didn't know how brittle Galena was and so I ended up losing quite a bit of it as it crumbled and flaked away. LOL.  This is what made it home.

Happy digging!
