Easter egg

Not so much for identifying, but for showing off. I thought I had posted pics of this guy before, but can't find any, so.. This is the natural, nature made shape I found this layered agate in. Looks like an Easter egg. I've been slowly working on trying to smooth it by hand (hence the slowly) & found something special in the special egg. Near the top on the back side (unfortunately in the milky upper layer) is a pretty dendritic fern/fan. It angles inward, making it even harder to see, but this is what I've gotten so far.  1 5/8" long by 1 1/8" wide (the rock, not the dendrite). The dendrite fern/fan is just shy of 1/4" in width. Pic for the dendrite is at 50x. The pitting on the back extends inwards at different angles from what I can tell. 3rd pic is backlit.

Since the first 3 pics were taken, I've managed to flatten the back a bit where the pitting is. These 3 pics are 50x views of some of that area. Looks really nice under magnification & not what I expected.

Thanks Scott. Maybe someday I'll manage to get it smooth & shiny.. or at least smoother & shinier.  Grin

Nice egg! And you sure have given us the tour of it. Thank you. Smiley

'Roun'hea we call that black and white banded quartz, 'Coon Tail.
More light comes thru on the back-lit pic than I would've thought.
Some guesses to start would be goethite for the dendrite and muscovite for golden-brown flakes in the last group of pics.

Dat's a fancy, highfalutin name for such a simple banded agate. Dun look like no coon's tail I ever saw though. Poor coon wuda been called Stubby having a tail that short.

As for the light passing through, the rock was about 1" thick before I started trying to flatten it some. I doubt I'll be able to get the pitting smoothed away on the front & sides, let alone the back. I'm just hoping to get it smoother so the layering & dendrite show better. In hand the middle band looks almost an extremely pale blue, but light shows it white. But no matter what, I like it.  Grin

Got a slightly better pic of the dendrite "fern". Shut off the LEDs on the Dino-lite & used a small LED flashlight. Not so much a clearer pic, but shows more of the depth. And it really does look like a fern growing into the agate.  Cheesy

Awesome picture, dave!
I like the 'empty'(?) circle at the base of the 'fern'.
What is up with that?

That's the attachment to the main stalk of course.  Grin Actually, I have no idea, the surface is solid there. No hole at all.

Could be your looking at pyrolusite, but it also looks like the material that makes up the moss in moss agates. The piece you magnified looks like the fine detail on jaspers I've collected. One local here in Baltimore produces fine dendrites possibly hematite on a tan jasper
