Well, that's a gnarly rock. Some people would call it a "squirrely' rock, but squirrely is a little different. This is classic gnarly. And I see where your gemstone fell out and left a nice negative impression.

Now I definitely could be wrong but I'm guessing this is some sort of Limestone formation. Possibly a "Tufa".
