Hello Ms. Maple, It's been a little cold to get out and hunt for rocks lately hasn't it. I'm glad you found a window of opportunity! Smiley

Yes, when looking at water polished and rounded pebbles like this one there is a lot of guess work. I can see how RickB would guess pet wood. The color and lines resemble wood. But when you see rocks with roughly parallel layers like this one it is 'usually', but not absolutely always, a good indicator that it is a certain type of rock.
A. Igneous
B. Metamorphic
C. Sedimentary
Can you guess which one?

Oh well, so much for quizzes...........

My 'guess' is this is sandstone with bedding planes colored by iron oxides.
