All the rocks i post here are found on one river in southwest Oregon. Every rock was grabed for different reasons. I was building a rockway and started grabbing the most colorfull rocks possible and these are some of my favorites'

Well thanks for getting the Oregon section started with some great pictures of your local rock finds, GaryS! I hope when your rockway project is finished you will continue to explore. Oregon has many treasures to be found.
The fossil rock with a hole in the middle looks like it might be a vertebra from a dolphin or shark. And I would "guess" the last piece is Petrified wood.

Hey Joe, yes i plan on going up river as often as possible this year. I am hooked.
Do you have any idea what the first rock is.
As for the last rock I was told it was serpentine and it is common in the Klamath mountain area of southwestern Oregon.

The first rock is an aphanitic rock that had a crack or fissure that became infilled with a more weather resistent material like silica.  It looks to be epidotized giving it a slight green color.  Unfortunately pictures cannot possibly convey as much information as if I could hold the rock in my hand.  But more information can get you a lot closer.  For example getting the mohs hardness value of the rock can be helpful.  I would also assume that the infilled crack material will be harder than the surrounding matrix.

Glad to hear you have identified the Serpentine, GaryS. Good  enough! The State Rock of California. You could have fun with it. It is a good carving stone and much of it is soft enough to work with regular woodworking tools like saws, files, chisels and sandpaper so it's not necessary to invest in a lot of diamond tools. A mask or respirator would be a good idea. Wink

I don't think the 2nd one is a vertebra, I don't see any indication of concentric rings from growth. Instead, I get more of a small fishing net weight or spindle whorl impression. There have been a lot of artifacts found in Southern Oregon. But I could be wrong.

Well thanks for bringing that possibility up. I considered that, too, Dave, and agree this piece has strong artifact potential. I believe I do see some concentric rings, (and am surprised you don't), so I am going to stick with it being a fossil first. Maybe Gary will be able to verify one way or the other at some point.
