I need mica

I was wondering if anybody knew of a local for "good" mica and would be kind enough to share it. In exchange I would be happy to send them a token of my appreciation.

I had a project in mind for a couple of years and finally have space to complete it. I thought I had a bunch of mica, but turns out, not enough. I know mica is abundant, but not all of it is the same. Some of the stuff I have turns out to be great to work with and some is too thin and bends too much.

Larger sheets and loose books would be great. I need the kind that doesn't exfoliate completely away but maybe a little on the edges. Stiff enough to stay in sheets and maintain structure, but not solid books or gems. Small included things are ok, as long as light will pass through the mica.

Scott you had some great mica a couple of years ago - pretty color and good size. Do you have any more of that or is there any more to get?
Thanks!
Rebecca

I WANT MY MAPO!  Smiley

Do you remember that add? Oh well, might be before y'alls time.  Roll Eyes

I'll try and dig up some good size pieces of that mica for
you, Rebecca, and bring them this weekend.
Glad to hear you might make it! I hope you can get one of
the open spots for Glendon, too.

Joe

You are the best Joe! I have a box of stuff for you too. I didn't have time to take pics the black stuff (which I believe is actually the knox chert), so I will bring it to you. It is gonna be a great weekend! Rain and all.

And no, I don't remember MAPO. But I do remember some commercial with people demanding something...too far back in the corner's of my mind to recall though. What is MAPO?

Ah yes MAPO,

When I was a child, our neighbor who worked for the railroad was on site during a train derailment. One of the box cars had been full of MAPO and he brought several dozen boxes to us us. Needless to say I had MAPO for breakfast for a loooong time. To this day I have avoided the stuff, as I am sure I had my life time allowance during that period.

So Boxcar Charlie derailed the MAPO shipment.
Hundreds or thousands of children all across America were
crying, "I want my MAPO!" It was an epidemic.
I think that's when "Wheaties" was born.

Yes, most definitely I need mica. It doesn't have to be huge either, but it can't be too exfoliated or falling apart. The mica needs to have some integrity. It seems to work better to have the mica in it's natural shape and with natural edges, rather than forming or cutting it.
I used some mica that I bought and don't like it at all. I much prefer to get stuff locally and from people I know. Or maybe I just prefer NC mica. Mica with garnets has turned out to be very exciting too. I made a flower for Tracy (from Hickory) with mica she gave me from the Buffalo mine. It is embedded with flat, bright red garnets. By far, I think it is the prettiest flower yet. Not that big, but very sweet.
So if you have some mica, Mark, send it my way, and I will make you a flower too...eventually.  Roll Eyes I think I just finished Scott's and Joe's and they started this whole thing 3 years ago, or so.
