Rocky Mount Quarry

The Tar Heel Gem and Mineral club of Raleigh, NC made
a fieldtrip to the WakeStone Corporation quarry a few
miles north of Rocky Mount this past Saturday, Oct 22.
No one has been to this quarry in 10 or more years so
there was no telling what we might find. Actually, we didn't
find much, but what we saw was very interesting to see.
This aggregate quarry is located on the eastern edge of the
Piedmont and it was very nice to be able to see the
different layers of deposited ancient "sea-shores" in the
sands and clays that capped the Granite below. The Granite
itself was of a different nature with more "pink" in some
large areas, a black and white Diorite type, and a solid
dense gray type of Granite called Tonalite. Not to mention
several black Diabase dikes cutting through the middle of
the pit.
So even though we didn't find much, there was a lot to look at.

The first pic is of us waiting for "someone-in-charge"  to
show up and let us in.
Next are some pics of the black Diabase dikes first from
a distance and then closer.

Allright, that's enough of the bottom, let's go look at the top.

If you've ever wondered what the ground looks like under all
the miles of sandy plowed fields you see in this area of the
state, this is the place to go. Coastal Plain deposits as much
as 30 feet thick, with layers of gravel full of beautifully
polished and rounded quartz pebbles, and maybe a sharks
tooth or two.

That is cool. Thanks for documenting and sharing your trip and  the quarry. I love those kind of views into the earth - like a cross-section.

Excellent report Joe.  I did take pictures this trip, but not half as many as Joe did, so I'm very glad Joe did the report.  The most interesting thing I found was a calcite vein that swirled in and around one of those diabase dikes.  There were very small vugs that allowed for the calcite to crystallize.  That's what I was looking at in the photos above.

Does anyone know if this is the same location as the Tarheel trip this weekend?  Did Hanson buy out the quarry?  Thanks
