Edenite (?)

I got these crystals in a trade recently. Smiley
It was love at first sight and I have been trying to think of a
good trade ever since I first laid eyes on them.
An all too familiar story........ Roll Eyes

Anyway, this friend purchased quite a lot of this material
10-15 years ago when it first hit the market. He said it was
being sold as Edenite Included Quartz from a recent find in
Madagascar. I have not been able to confirm that yet with
anything I have found on the internet, but will keep searching.
I have found in several places, however, Actinolite Included
Quartz from Pakistan that looks exactly like this material.

The first pic is a group shot of the "Edenite" crystals
leaning against a cluster of Simpson Farm Amethyst. The
largest crystal is 4" long. The two pieces in front are for
cutting material. And then a few close-ups for your enjoyment. Smiley

Thanks for looking,
Joe

Joe,

Those are some mighty fine crystals.  I would go with Actinolite in quartz, as opposed to Edenite.  Both are members of the Amphibole Group and closely related, as you probably found out during your identity search.

The crystal habit is more like Actinolite (or Actinolite var. Byssolite), whereas, Edenite crystals tend to be tabular.  Edenite fluoresces pale green-blue under SW UV, while Actinolite is non-fluorescent.  Check for fluorescence.

Keep posting more incredible quartz with inclusions.  They're great to marvel at.

Dennis My Friend! How good it is to hear from you! Smiley
I was thinking about you just today and wondering how you
are doing.
Thanks for the update on your condition and additional pic
you posted on the Bowling Green amethyst thread. Glad you
did that. We need to get more of the amethyst from there
photographed and recorded since the site is essentially gone
now. I've been meaning to get some of my pieces over to
Scott to photograph and had forgotten about it til now.
So thanks for bringing that back to my attention. Wink

And yes, I agree with you about these crystals.
I love 'em! Smiley
From what I can tell there is a very fine line between
Actinolite and Edenite, but as you mentioned, it is easy to
find examples of Actinolite in this form but I have not been
able to find any examples of Edenite in this form.
Unfortunately, my shortwave bulb is burnt out, and there
is no fluorescence under the longwave.
The examples I've seen from Pakistan are identical to these
crystals. It's just an interesting circumstance that the man
I got these from swears they were advertised as Edenite
included crystals from Madagascar.

Anyway, as they say, three in the hand is better than
two in the bush! (or something like that.)
I have two pieces prepped for cutting and am looking
forward to getting to that.
We are heading down to the Uwharries this weekend. The
weather is too good to pass on. But hope to see you soon.
We also have a Science Rocks Fair at a local elementary
school we will be doing this coming Thursday if you are
interested in joining us.

Joe

Very nice cabs.  I have one in my collection that was cut across the crystal and cabbed.  It made a nice design. I don't do any cutting.  So not sure when I added it to my collection.
Joe you do beautiful work. Cheesy

Joe,

This looks like actinolite. Some years ago, I use to collect at two localities in Randolph county with similar material. One was known as the Phillips farm and the other was a farm near Ramseur. I have a nice one from the Phillips which isn't open to collecting anymore and several pieces from the other site which too isn't producing now. The Randolph County quartz with actinolite was an olive to rich green needle sometimes also containing rutile as well. Very beautiful pieces that you have.
