Chatham County Mudstones

Sounds like the name of a song............ Smiley Roll Eyes

Just wanted to post some pics of this material for the record.
Mudstone or Argillite. Shale or Siltstone.

These first two were found very close to each other in Chatham Co.
There are many, many varieties of the first red and black
banded piece from all over the state, country, and world.
Compact hardened, or indurated, pieces like this are called
Mudstone. They have the tendency to fall apart at the
layers like Shale.
I think, Roll Eyes, sometimes these layers get "altered" and are
infused with more silica, making them hard enough to be
called Jasper?
The second pic is a very unique rock type for anywhere.
I would call it a mixture of Siltstone and Sandstone due to
some of the visible particles.
Clay sized particles= sub-microscopic
Silt sized particles=  microscopic
Sand sized particles= visible to the unaided eye

Please ignore the "Malachite" heading above those first
two pics as I was taking some pics of some Malachite also
when I took those pics.

One last piece of Mudstone from Chatham County.
This is really a classic textbook example of Mudstone and my
favorite of the three. You can get a better feel for Mud
from this piece.
First pic is the Cake of Mud.
Second pic is a closer view of the top showing the layering better.
The last pic shows the sliced surface. Cut almost along the
layered plane I think this shot gives you the best feel for the mud.

Glad you like those, John.
I was a little surprised by all the variety of Argillite and
Mudstone Chatham Co has. I have one more type from Chatham
I need to post pics of.
These are all around Mohs 5, with the last of the above 3 types
being the softest. If I ever get anything carved out of the
stuff I'll post some pics of that, too. Wink
