Thanks goes out to NCGrampa, NC_Miner, Raleigh Rockhound, Laurie, Rebecca, and Becky for being great dig buddies for this little adventure.

I started the trip at six a.m. driving west toward Maiden, NC.  It took just a little over three hours to arrive at the carport containing the coffee can that I would deposit my five dollar fee at the Propst Farm.  I unpacked my tools and walked into the woods where I saw Raleigh Rockhound, and Laurie digging away.  It didn't take me long to find my way into a hole that I have found corundum in on a previous trip there.

This is the quartz layer you must find.  Depending on where you are this layer can be anywhere from 5 - 8 feet below the surface.  Notice the angular quartz chunks which are always present along with the corundum.  The piece pictured in situ is 1 1/8 inch long by 5/8 inch thick.  Its definitely got some color in it.

Without sifting through the dirt excavated from the quartz layer you would surely be leaving some nice pieces behind.

Here is Raleigh Rockhound with his screen.

The weather was perfect for digging.  And so we dug till we couldn't see.  It was was time to find camp and retire for the evening.

Laurie's friend Steve and his wife were gracious hosts, allowing us to stay the evening in their toasty warm house.  The following pictures are only a few of the wonders on their property.

So now it was Sunday the eighteenth and I was ready to find more corundum.  It wasn't long before the crystals began to roll out.  I ended up finding more on the second day in half the time spent the day before.  This is a corundum crystal that was still clinging to the clay surrounding a piece of quartz.

The following pictures are of two crystals in which are first shown without any enhancements.  The second picture of the specimens have mineral oil applied to bring out the color.

The first specimen is 3 x 1.5 cm.

The second is 3.5 x 1 cm.

I just recently found out from a conversation with my friend Dave that quartz crystals, although rare, can be found there. Well here's the one I found. It was sitting in there in that layer along with all the angular quartz and corundum.

Holy Crap, Scott! You did good.   Cheesy  As you know I got skunked.  But the good news is I'm going back this weekend.  Did you do anything with the quartz layer in the back of your hole with the big overhang?  If not, I'm thinking that I will chop off some of the overhang for safety then go for that.
Again, excellent job on getting to the crystals!

Rebecca, not as good as you guys did the week before.  I did get 2 half inch hexagons about a half inch long and one piece a little over an inch by an inch by a half inch broken off a larger piece. I'll try to get better pictures later.

Those are nice. Did you check that area I was in? I was wondering if there was more there.
I want to go back! I can't believe I got the corundum bug now!
