Inside the Lee Creek Mine and Other Good Stuff

Most of these pictures were taken during April of 2009.  This is the last time anyone has been officially allowed to hunt inside the Lee Creek Mine in Aurora, NC.  Please enjoy

Picture 1: Everyone getting last minute instructions and tips before descending the ramp into the mine.

Picture 2: Descending the ramp.  Lots of water in the pit.  Fortunately for my group it was not at a dangerous level.

Picture 3: Looking down off the ramp into one of the pools.  That is a sheer drop.

Picture 4: Bottom of the ramp.  More on the cool layers in a minute.

Picture 5: Putting the size of the ramp into prespective.

Picture 6: Those cool layers again.  I believe that is the dark lower layer is the Pliocene Yorktown layer and the lighter color layer is the Pleistocene James City Layer.  The Miocene Pungo River layer is not visible.  If I'm incorrect, please feel free to correct me.

Picture 7: Other side of the ramp showing the same layers.

Picture 8: Deep pool with one of the drag lines in the background. Those drag lines are huge!

Picture 9: Close up of one of the pools.  It really gives you a sense of how deep these can be.

Picture 10: The spoils of the 2009 hunt.  No big teeth or megs, but a great time was had by all.

Picture 11:  Closer view of one of the drag lines with a truck in the foreground for scale.

Picture 12: An unusual Hemipristis (snaggletooth shark) from the Pungo River Piles.  Most Lee Creek Teeth are much lighter in color while this one is jet black.   It's also larger than most hemi's being just under 2".

Picture 13: A hole I dug.  I couldn't resist.

Picture 14: Mako Mountain May 2012.  I must have found a dozen makos out of that pile.

Picture 15: May 2010.  Another hole I dug which produced the subject of the next picture.

Picture 16: A cool little Chubentensis tooth.  Alot of folks consider these megalodons, but it's actually a meg ancestor.

Picture 17: Some cool finds from May 2012.  Some nice makos from Mako Mountain and a mostly complete sting ray mouth plate.

Picture 18:  Some more makos from Mako Mountain and also a nice little hemi and sand tiger shark tooth.

Thanks for looking.

Great pictures and information.  You sure did find a lot of sharks teeth.  I would love to be able to hunt again at Aurora.  I've only been once, and I loved it.

Thanks for the report and great pics, Jack.
We do miss those trips into the mine.
Maybe one day they'll start it up again.

I have still never tried Green Mill Creek, or whatever it's called,
in Greenville. Would like to check it out one of these days.

Joe

Hi Joe,

I hunt Green Mill Run everytime I'm in the area.  Unfortunately I've not found anything great there as of yet.  i know there is alot of good stuff there as many of my friends have scored some nice finds there.

Hi Scott,

We all hope the day will come when we can get back in there.  It seems I picked up the hobby a little too late.....
