Pennsylvania Celestite

Well it was a little too cold for me to get up early enough and
go out and dig today so Pahound came over with some of the
Celestite he has found in PA for me to look at.
I was immediately surprised to see and learn of all the different
habits the Celestite could come in and had to try and take
some pics of the material to share.

These specimens come from the Meckley Quarry in Mandata, PA.
Besides for the blue Celestite, (or Celestine), the specimens
from a limestone matrix have liberal amounts of Calcite and
beautiful Strontianite, with some minor Pink Dolomite.
For those of you who might be interested Pahound does
have some of this material available for sale or trade.
He's a little slow about getting on the board, but try
sending him a PM and be patient. Wink

Here are a few pieces. The first two pics are different angles
of the same piece with mostly a tabular habit of Celestite
covered with Strontianite. The third piece is larger with
massive "cubic" looking Celestite. The last pic is of two
pieces where I'm trying to illustrate some of the difference in habits.

These next three pics, I will be the first to admit, are none too good. Tongue
I was trying to get a pic of the almost flat looking terminations
on some of these tabby type crystals. I didn't see the tiny
pyrite cubes on the last crystals until I began taking the pics.
The first two pics are different angles of the same crystal.

I also did not know that Celestite could grow in what is
generally called the Dogtooth form, but I was immediately a fan!

And you just gotta love the Strontianite!
I know I do.
Thanks for bringing these specimens over and letting me try
taking some pics, Ryan. Smiley

Nice Photos Joe!! Wink

Rebecca, you may or may not be aware that the Holston River material we collected is found in the same Geological formation as the material collected in Meckleys Quarry. Used to attend the open house at Meckley's back in the day, but they stopped having the open houses abouth six years ago or so. Embarrassed

Great thread, thanks for the pics.  I have also collected at Meckley a few times, what a wonderful place!  I was unaware that pink dolomite had been found there.  Celestite in NC?  It would seemingly have to occur in one of the unmetamorphosed carbonate rock units, which are rare in NC.  The Shady Dolomite is too altered.  There are units in the Hot Springs Window of Madison County that could theoretically produce celestite, but I have not seen any reports.  The other possibility would be the Foote Mine, where just about anything can happen with it's rare and varied chemistry.  The "official list" does include celestite, but this list is not considered gospel by any means, it's full of mistakes. http://www.geology.enr.state.nc.us/proj_earth/pdf/A_Listing_of_North_Carolina_Mi...
By the way, I have a whole lot of strontianite specimens from Holston River very similar to those pictured above.  I will be glad to give some specimens to anyone on here that wants one, or two, or three.
