Savannah River Agate and What?

Print Post

I'm not very knowledgeable on minerals yet. I do know this is Savannah River agate but trying to figure out what developed inside. It was given to me this way. It is a bubbly white looking but most of it is a light blue. I don't know if the light blue is just some reaction to air or part of the stone. I was thinking on cleaning it up more but afraid to take off the blue unless it is better that way. If I could clean it up, what can I use on this to clean and keep the blue? Anyway...what is the bubble like stuff and blue inside of this agate?
Thanks.... New Digger

It is really pretty, is what it is.  Wink
You probably won't hurt it by cleaning it a bit more. It is a cryptocrystalline quartz.

more specifically it is chalcedony and would likely not be affected by a bit of stringent cleaning.

Yes, that's a very nice and large vug for that Savannah River material.
And, as Rebecca and John have already said, a real pretty
blue on the botryoidal chalcedony druse.
I would first have to look closer, with a loupe, at all the
dark spots to make sure they are just dirt before washing
them away. Then take a wet toothbrush and try a little area
before going at the whole piece. There can be a lot of
interesting accessory minerals found in those vugs.

Toward the bottom of this link they have a list of some of
the accessory minerals you can find. (Even tho I think they
have mis-spelled chalcedony in their list. Wink)

Thanks for the pic,

Thank you for the responses. It is chalcedony and the link was very helpful. I believe I should be able to clean it more with soap and water but don't think I'll use anything else on it for now.
Also, while examining it closer, I found an area externally from the blue that appears to be Drusy quartz? I'm adding a pic of it below. The first picture above show a small part of it. If you look at the left center point of the picture of the rock, it is that corner with the quartz. It does look a little bubbly too like the other area so it may be more of the chalcedony but it looks different, more sparkly like druzy quartz.

Good enough, Peter. Thanks for the picture.
Since chalcedony is a form of cryptocrystalline quartz it is not too much of a
stretch to see the two different forms next to each other
on the same piece.
Here's another link for you from the "Quartz Page";
