So are phantoms showing in these? Plenty of Scufflin' crystals appeared like this.

Dang, Tim, have you ever thought about a manicure. Grin

But, yes, there are real pretty little phantoms in clustered areas of crystals
running thru there.
I remember seeing more in the "middle" area of the slope.
All different beautiful shades of purple, some quite brilliant.
There are so many in areas they create a "chevron" pattern thru the cluster.
Thanks again for the pics. Wink

I'll have you know that is a quartz and clay manicure and it cost me about $500!

Yes, many chevrons. Some quite plain on little tooth shaped milky and dark purple crystals.

And yes, my purple stuff came from the middle, right below "the tree".  Phantoms also in much of the clear/cloudy clusters and points I pulled from the lowest dumps at bottom of slope, just above where the creek fills the machine dug trench. Rebecca's biggest haul all came from the very top of the hill. Ill look again for phantoms in her crystals.

I wonder how folks did at the second weekend. They had perfect weather on Saturday. We did lots of outdoor stuff at home  instead, and anyway we already have more piles of  Scufflin' quartz than we know what to do with!

A soak in leftover coffee worked better than stronger acid on the black coating. Maybe the oils in the coffee helped goo up the coating. The cluster on right was almost entirely black after soap and water soaks and scrubs. The result here was after about two hours in the coffee and scrubbing and picking. The etching in crystal faces shows up nicely when all the black is gone. Less effective on the iron stained piece on left, but still showed improvement. Now they are back in coffee overnight.

We'll yes this thread is getting old, but thought I'd show how folic acid (Folex carpet cleaner) suspends solids. This is after sitting overnight. And a before and after, Folex soak followed by scrubbing. Some will go back into soaking. Others I will declare good enough.

Folex needs no gloves and leaves your scrub brushes clean! No acid stains either. I'm curious if repeated soaks will get results same or better than CLR or iron out. I've used the latter in the past on heavily iron stained schist with garnets, cooking it outdoors in a thrift store crock pot. Worked fast, but turned the schist an ugly green. I used various acid and base soaks, back and forth, until I got an acceptable whitish color, then soaked in water for days.

I am glad you are doing these experiments.  The literature out there for rock cleaning chemicals is not as prevalent as it should be.  Although if we get into other minerals besides quartz, possibly an entire book could be written on methodologies, tools, acids, chemicals, and even chemical cocktails that should be used based on the mineral.  I would never have suspected coffee as a cleaning agent.

The coffee was more of a, "there's a stale pot of coffee .  . . Why not?" I was surprised with results but I'm more impressed by Folex. Also coffee stains the cracks but washes out. Folex diluted with about four parts water softens rust stains to point where you can scrub off much, soak again, scrub off more. Next I need to buy my own jug of Folex (versus raiding the household jug) and try undiluted soaks and cooks. Folex is sold as a carpet cleaner, and it works superbly; makes just about any stain disappear as you watch. That's why I thought it might work well on rocks.

Thanks for the report on your cleaning experiments, Tim.
I will have to look into the folex, but I don't ever have any "leftover" coffee. Wink
That's some pretty material you came home with!
Thanks for the pics!
