Rebeca, Chip and I picked some nice moonstone from a central Virginia creek today. We would have stayed longer had the horseflies not found us in the late afternoon.

Today's finds. Nice chunks of moonstone, some with sizable zones clear of fracture. Rebecca M Ford found that door-stop moonstone in my hand. The small green stone is probably kyanite. The three dark balls are deeply weathered garnets. All pulled from a creek in central Virginia.

That small green stone is amazonite.

Not sure. I'll have to do some testing. Is blade like in shape, not blocky like the moonstone at this site or the amazonite at Morefield Mine. Structure just not the same. Feldspar at this site seems to be either rotten pegmatite or the moonstone. Site is known for occasional blade of kyanite.

Cobbled together a candling rig tonight to examine some of the translucent moonstones for clean zones.

Looks like a real comfortable place to hunt for rocks on a hot summers day! Smiley
Y'all made quite a haul!
Cool backlit pics. Can't wait to see what some of the cabs look like!

I'll bring some down to Robert this Saturday.  I think he could cab out some of this sooner than I can rehab my equipment. Seems like when I have free time, I go back into the field instead of fixing and setting up my shop.  Cool

That's a nice haul! I have a few nice pieces of moonstone I found at Morefield Mine a few years back.
