West Virginia Plant Fossils, March 2015

Made a trip to south-central West Virginia in late March to collect Coal Age (Pennsylvanian Period) plant fossils.  Found many Lepidodendron bark imprints (diamond-shaped pattern in diagonal rows), Lepidodendron leaves (called Lepidophylloides), and roots (called Stigmaria).  Sigillaria bark imprints (rib-like pattern) were also common.  Some ferns could be found by splitting the very dark, coaly shale.  There was a pattern of hard sandstone layers alternating with dark shale layers, representing dryer and wetter climate periods.  First 6 photos show Lepidodendron bark imprints, followed by a photo of Lepido. leaves plus ferns, then a Lepido. root, and finally Sigillaria bark.

Good job hunting, Victor, and thanks for the pictures.
But I think a welcome mat must've gotten mixed in with the shale
in that last pic. Wink

Looking more closely at the last photo, I think I can make out: Welcome To the Home of the Flintstones. Smiley
