Sorry Lizzy I'm not seeing any images.  Have you tried reducing their size?  Are they .JPG files?

Thanks for letting me know! I can see them on my browser so I wonder what is going wrong. They are .jpg files.

Jeepers Creepers, lizzy, sorry it was such a struggle getting your pics posted.
I saw them once the first time you posted but when I went back they were gone.
Anyway, I'm glad your perseverance paid off and you were able to get your pics posted! Smiley
Very pretty cabochons. Nice shapes and polish!
So let's see what you are working with.

Pic 1. Top to bottom.
1. Don't have a name for this one and not sure where it would come from.
Looks like a chert or agate with a shiny black spot of hematite(?) in it. Not sure.
2. Sodalite, possibly from Canada.
3. Ocean Jasper from Madagascar.
4. Brazilian Agate from Brazil.
5. Picture Jasper from the Owyhee River Valley, Oregon.
6. Clear agate or quartz with black and gold stuff in it.( Roll Eyes)
7. Unakite, Virginia or NC.

Pic 2. Top to bottom.
1. Snowflake obsidian, from out west.
2. Crazy Lace Agate. Missouri or Mexico.
3. Dendritic or plume agate.
4. Purple plume agate. We should be able to come up with a more exact name and location.
5. First guess would be a Green Aventurine.
6. Same as the one above it. Not sure of name or location.

Last Pic, both are Sodalite.

Hope this helps you some and keep up the good work! Smiley

Wow Joe. Thanks! There is so much to know. I am familiar with a few of these. Namely, ocean jasper, sodalite, unakite, and snowflake obsidian, but couldn't tell you where they originate from.

I have always loved stones.. to the extent that I used to come home from the park with pocket fulls of any nondescript pebble I could get my little hands on. I can't say much has changed.  Lips Sealed

But every time I think I have a handle on what different specimens are, I realize I have no clue whatsoever. I studied science in college, but it was biology, so I am a little out of my element.  Wink

I really appreciate your insight. I just moved about an hour out from Raleigh to help my family farm and to pursue activism and lapidary.. so.. I have to start somewhere. From being on this forum it looks like there are quite a lot of rockhounds in this area. That is exciting seeing as though I'm winging this and it would be fun to meet people with like interests from the area.

Thanks again, Joe.

No problem, lizzy. Looks like you are off to a great start! Smiley
There are thousands of different types of agates and jaspers and cherts.
Some of the more notable types have  been named and are more famous,
but I can't remember all of them either.
Like the clear agate with the black and gold inclusions, bottom left of your first pic,
looks like something familiar? Maybe Graveyard Plume from Idaho.  Huh
As a lapidary I, of course, look more at the material and how it can be cut and polished.
As a collector I am more interested in where the material comes from. How much is there, or how "rare" a material is it?
As a rockhound I want to know if I can go and get me some. Cheesy

Now, before I get too far off the subject, that purple agate cab
is a lot like some purple agate that I have from the very southern part of Arizona, almost Mexico.
Except your agate has more of a "plume" and my slab has pointed needle type formations called "sagenite".

Good luck with the lapidary and down on the farm.
