Here, tim, is the piece at the top right of my group specimens photo above
that you mentioned you "thought" it was one you were wondering about.
It did have some good shimmer at one angle all over the outside,
but I couldn't see any well defined layers to go by so I tried to slice it along that plane.
And then tried to just grind the halves down. Unfortunately this piece didn't want to give us anything.

But this may also be the one you were thinking about?
It was broken in two pieces in route. The freshly broken edges had great shimmer
but I couldn't make out any clear areas in the rock.
Pics 1 and 2 below.

I was very surprised to see the nice clear layers appearring as I ground into it
but it did not want to hold together and kept flaking apart.
The third pic below is where I stopped with that half.

The next 3 pics are of the other half partially exposed. I am going to slice it along the white line
you see running thru it in the last two pics.

After slicing the half in half  I worked the top slice down into the cab in the picsbelow.
The other piece is the bottom. I have the bottom piece positioned in the second pic
so the flat top represents what wuld be the best angle to have for the top
but then you'd have to slice the stone again to get a long very narrow stone,
so we're going to see how far we get just grinding it down like it sits.

Just what we needed. A good break!
It would take video, ie; movement, for me to show you the ardularesence in all these cabs,
so I'm not trying to, but if you don't mind the "stained" areas
I'd say we're on the way to having a set!
All we need is a good honker of a ring stone out of the best and last piece. Wink

I ground the edges down for a better look.
Pic 2 is the best angle of refraction and I'm going to slice it lengthwise at the pencil mark
in the last pic to try and get two long elliptical cabs out of it.
It looks like real pretty material. Smiley

I'm not so sure about that, tim. Wink
I'm not sure I've figured out a thing yet, but I think I'm getting closer. Cheesy

This material is lots of fun to work and there are a lot of ways you can go about it.
It would help immensley if you had a big pile of rough to work with. Wink
Besides for the first piece I was more or lesss trying to see how high grade a cab I could find.
There is definitely high grade material in this moonstone, but once you eliminate the fractures and iron stained areas
your cabs are going to be small-ish.
But there's still a lot of experimenting to be done...........
I think I got "close" on this cut, but then again you're trying to line up something that
shimmers shinneys and moves like a...............oh never mind. Roll Eyes
Too bad there aren't any "do-overs" so you can compare other angles.
I'm real curious how this piece would have looked just cabbed down thru the layers as it was?
Anyway here's what left of the two pieces after roughing out.

Since this our best material these have got to be our best attempts,
so we can't have any ugly fractures or discolorations left in these,
which means they will have to get a lot smaller.
The first pic below is the rectangle being reduced but still with a line that has to come out.
Next two pics are top and bottom of the oval. There is much reduction I would like to do to this
but there is a bad fracture chipping out of the left side in the pic of the bottom.
I chickened out and decided not to try and take it out because if it kept going it would go thru the middle of the stone.

The last pic is what we ended up with.
I'll polish the whole batch up and we'll do a group photo!
But you really won't be able to tell much until you can hold them in your hand.

Ooh and aah!  Hey at the very least this will help me shrug off the problems with the fracture planes.  The staining doesn't bother me -- it is what it is.

Well, I'm sure I wouldn't say that I knew what I was doing about cutting this stuff,
but I know I know more than I did before.
Maybe it's just the nature of the moonshine for it to always look like there might have been a "better" angle to cut it on. Wink
Anyway, I sure enjoyed the opportunity to check this material out.
It looks to me to have very high grade areas in it that are well worth the pursuit
and it is well worth stockpiling.
Finally finished the polish on the cabs and will get them in the mail to you asap.
I know you can't see much from the photo so I am anxious for you to inspect them in person.
If you see anything you like and think I deserve something for time and trouble
I will gladly take more of your rough. Smiley
Keep on huntin' this stuff!

Hi guys,

Nice job, Joe and very interesting work.  I think the fractures/discolorations give each stone its own character - like with emeralds, the flaws are a part of their beauty.

My two cents. Smiley

cheers,

Good to hear from you, Robert, and thanks.  Smiley
Agreed. Some folks like a nice fracture free pure gemstone
and some think the fractures are what make it beautiful.
And alot of us are guilty of both. Wink

Joe - Nice work, and don't send them all back! Keep what you want.  I only "need" three:  one for the landowner, one for my dame, and one for the little boy who lives down the lane.  - Tim
