Dwight Denson Estate Auction

I never met Dwight, but Dwight D. Denson was an avid rockhound and paleontologist who passed of a heart attack in 2015 at the age of 60.
For the last 20 years every summer he would go out to Utah and dig for dinosaur bone and collect rock. He amassed a huge collection at his museum house in Goldston, NC and, from what I understand, was a regular at the Grassy Creek show in Spruce Pine.
His entire estate was auctioned off, absolutely, house, car, and everything in it, yesterday. It was a raw day with a cold drizzle most of the afternoon, but a tough crowd, and Dwight can rest assured that he got twice retail for anything that weighed under 50lbs.
Forget about setting up at shows, auctions are the way to go! Wink

Here's a picture from the side of the house of the auction just getting going 9am Saturday morning.
If you look real close I think you'll see fellow RHL member and world famous NC amber and fossil hunter, VictorK, in the crowd.

And now the group from the backporch around behind the auctioneer.
From this angle you may be able to pick out Master Tumbler JohnH in the crowd.

The back porch was lined with polished "Logs and Stumps" of petrified wood that were the big ones. All weighing over 100 lbs and some over 300lbs. They did not get to these until early afternoon, and many could not bid on them, or move them, so they were pretty good deals for a few.
This was the first one they auctioned and it went for $400. An incredible yellow that I thought would fetch more.
I don't remember what the ones in the second picture went for.

These two were really great bargains. The big one went for $500, and a young kid in the neighborhood who was overwhelmed by all the rocks and fossils and had to have a piece of something, got the smaller one for $250. I was glad to see that. Worked out well. Smiley

The Trilobite, both pieces as one, sold for $550.00.
The dino bone went for about $1300.00. There were several other large dino bones inside the house that went for several thousand each. The highest bid was just over $4000.

Here's a look around the rest of the backyard. The front yard looked the same.
I set myself a $500 budget and spent $400, so I did all right. I was zoned in on the agatized dino bone rough, which was in the cardboard flats on the tables in the back. One lady kept out bidding me for first pick and every time she chose the flats I was looking at. I had to make hasty second choices and now I wish I had gotten more. She got the best but the rest was real pretty, great material too.
It was a really interesting day.

Great report Joe. I wish I could have come, but had a previous commitment.  That pet wood looked awesome! I hope you were able to make it way from the auction without breaking the bank. Thanks for the report!

Well Wailele, I'm not sure how that works with fossils.
Petrified wood has completely altered to silica. Agates are also mostly silica, so you could say the pet wood is "agatized". But, even tho I use that word, "agatized", occasionally, I'm not really sure it's a real word.

Some dino bone will alter to silica, like wood, but it is not common and is very sought after material. That large bone was "fossilized" but not "agatized". What the chemistry is of different stages of "fossilization" is way above my pay grade, Tongue, but would be interesting to read about.

The "agatized" dino bone was the main thing I went to the auction looking for. Unfortunately, this one other lady with much deeper pockets than mine was looking for the same thing and she ended up with the best pieces. Below are a couple pics of the agatized bone I did get. I hope you can see how the bone has now altered to shiny silica and beautiful colors like pet wood, and not like some old bone. The close-up pic is so you can see the cellular structure still preserved in the bone. It's really beautiful, rare, material.

And of course you know what the big blob of agate sitting behind the bone in pic 1 is? Yep, coprolite. Dino doo doo. Pies from the sky. Roll Eyes
He had, literally, over a ton of some of the nicest doo doo I've ever seen. Some with dog-tooth calcite crystal lined vugs and some with the prettiest purple chalcedony ever. I went for the purple and didn't end up with much of the calcite.

Thanks for clearing that up for me, Joe. Makes sense.

The dino bone in the bottom left corner of the 2nd pic is very nice and I couldn't help but to laugh about the Dino doo doo. I searched the internet for more pics cause I was curious to see what more of them would look like and found a website, http://www.poozeum.com/coprolites.html. It was really gross and yet fascinating to look at. I would have never thought that some coprolites had bite marks in them. AND I now understand why fossilized turds have the name coprolite. Fancy Greek name for "Dung Stone".

Thanks for the pics and the info!

Joe -- Great pictures and report. It was a rare event - a local auction of top quality petrified wood, fossils and minerals. The bidding was intense and lots of pieces sold for much more than I expected.
