Is fluorite toxic?

I'm probably wrong here, but I feel like fluorite has small bits and traces of uranium, which is radioactive. I may be wrong here, but i'll never know unless I ask!   Cheesy

It's possible that some fluorite could have some inclusions of uranium, but it's just as likely to be any other number of minerals. In order to be certain your particular specimen has any you would need a geiger counter. Even if you did in fact find a trace of radioactivity in your fluorite it would not be enough to be alarmed or worried about it.

Everything Scott said is spot on. I found a paper that does a decent job talking about Uranium inclusions in Flourite from Egypt. If reading scientific papers scares you try just reading the Abstract, Introduction, and Conclusion. The paper was pretty interesting and talks about basing Uranium mining operations in Egypt on the color of the Flourite that is being found. Here is the link to the paper.http://www.geologija-revija.si/dokument.aspx?id=1067

Enjoy! Smiley
