I know these aren't morels either.
Scott, if you feel this post should be else where please feel free to move it. I'm just going to blame it on Hydro. Wink

Anyway, yes it's been hot around here lately. It's been hot everywhere. But we have been getting alot of afternoon and evening showers and storms to help keep it wet and humid.
Finally getting around to some yardwork today I stumbled upon this "grove" in the front yard.

So I was wondering what other fungi we might have in the front yard?
Besides for me of course. Cheesy

That is a lot of variety!
Really pretty ones too.
I think the bright red one is screaming "eat me if you want to die a painful death". The orange ones look sort of familiar, but more used like an herbal remedy than dinner.  The fungi world is so complex, it is much better to identify without a doubt before attempting to eat/ingest.

Listen to Radiolab's, "From Tree to Shining Tree" to really think about mushrooms ...differently. (Maybe not you, Joe. I am sure you already knew they could mine.)  Wink

Wow Joe that is one hell of a collection that!!

The bright red one is amazing!! And looks rather delicious!! But yeah I probably wouldn’t try any as Rebecca said... if we get some rather strange messages popping up, about rainbows and how groovy everything is, we will know you didn’t listen!!

Personally I would never ever eat a mushroom unless it came in a packet! Seems a bit like Russian roulette to me

Yes, Rebecca and Dude, the red one does look especially toxic.
I would never try one until I saw someone else do it first, then I'd wait 24 hours. Wink
Don't worry about me. This cool herd of pink elephants with blue spots has moved into the front yard now. They're flitting around from blossom to shroom like big ol'bumblebees! Surprisingly agile given their size! Cheesy

Well then you found the right ones!  Cheesy

It is so crazy to think how humans discovered what plants were edible/useful/medicinal/poison. Who gets the testing job? The shaman or the jerk in the village?
I was told by someone recently that mushrooms are the "mouthpiece" of the earth...shamans used them to communicate with the earth and learn the secrets of all the plants?
It sure is a beautiful idea.

The red ones are russula, they are bitter to the taste but edible. The first set of photos are amanita Jacksonii they are a sought after mushroom by most advanced foragers. There are some in not sure about there as well. Maybe one bolete which can be edible as well. There are a lot of them out there that are really tasty and edible. I just foraged today and came home with chicken of the woods, lobster mushrooms, and a nice cauliflower mushroom as well. I recommend getting a pocket guide on North Carolina wild mushrooms and reading up a bit. Here's a link to a good page with info on the jacksonii.

Very pretty finds there, Josh. They look good enough to eat! Smiley

Thanks for the help with an ID. I do need to get a book, but anytime you're in the neighborhood feel free to stop by and forage.

Joe,

Several of your 'shrooms appear to be Caesar's amanita, i.e. the red and reddish orange ones in your first few photos.  Do not eat.  I'm not sure about the others without keying them out.

When the men on the chessboard get up and tell you where to go
And you've just had some kind of mushroom, and your mind is moving low

Go ask Alice, I think she'll know

Amanita caesarea https://g.co/kgs/7Ruz4b

Completely edible. Do your research before consuming any mushrooms.

NC mushroom group on Facebook is a great resource for mushroom identification and connecting with local foragers who do this for a living.

Here is another link with more information and how to prepare them. I've personally never eaten them.

Thanks for the help guys, and Lewis Carroll. Cool
Appreciate the link, jgards, but I'm going to stick to my rule.
I'm not eating any of them until I see someone else eat them first, .....and live! Wink
