Gwinnett County

I was very fortunate to be able to accompany Scott and collect some of these unique crystals found at an isolated hot spot in a couple of lots of a housing development in Gwinnett County, Georgia around the year 2013. The pockets were huge and we easily collected all we could carry in that one visit.
The unusual growth of these crystals is very similar to the unique Skeletal and Artichoke combination habits of the Diamond Hill Mine a little further north in South Carolina, but these Gwinnett County crystals are like Diamond Hill crystals on steroids. A very complicated habit and the crystals were “zippered” together in rows in the pockets.  A truly rare type of quartz crystal.
The heavy black manganese coating on most of these crystals can be removed with work but I like the definition of growth the contrast provides. I first thought the coating and strange formation wouldn't appeal to most people, but they have gotten an enthusiastic reception from all I have shown them to.

Much of quartz clusters I collected from Scufflin Acres in Prospect, VA, were coated like this or with a whitish mineral. After cleaning off coatings on some, I decided I like them better with the coatings intact. Cheers everyone!
