Hello all,

I've not been here for many years, but I've been in NC for about 6 months now and found this in Raleigh, not far from House Creek.
This is what it looks like after an oxalix acid bath for a day. Not sure what this little blue dot is, I can't imagine it's kyanite?
I don't know if the greenish tint is epidote, but I don't think so. I just have no clue what I've got here, and any help would be much appreciated!
I almost threw it out because it's kinda chewed up looking, but I'm curious about the colors.

Welcome back to the Capital City, Zadzi.
House Creek is still a great place to look for interesting rocks!
One thing House Creek is known for is it's Chlorite Included Quartz and that is what is causing the green tint in your piece of quartz.
In fact, publications from the 1960's and 70's list "Mossy Agate" as one of the rocks to look for. I've never seen any mossy agate at House Creek but that's what they were calling the Chlorite Included Quartz.

The blue spot could be a lot of things, or a mixture of things, but we would need a better look at it to make guesses. As you say, I doubt it's Kyanite, but it could be, and it could be mica. Might be some Ilmenite or Graphite mixed in with it giving it that color?

Go find a bigger piece! Smiley

I run into alot of chlorite in the jasper from Baltimore. But it rarely is that fine a partical. That could be alge that has penetrated the quartz fron long periods of soaking in water.I have run into that quite often.  If you soak in hydrochloric acid it may blacken . Try to get access to stereo microscope , see if you can see the crystalline structure of the chlorite.

Thanks, guys. I was just reading up on chlorite a few hours ago and I wasn't sure if it was that. But algae, wow, never even considered this. I don't have access to a stereo microscope unfortunately!
Definitely going to keep exploring the area and see what else is around.

Good point about the chlorite, CB, but there is a lot of quartz down here included with chlorite. We find it filtered and finely diffused in the quartz like that a lot. It will often times tint the quartz a green color without any signs of structure. Magnified you can usually see particles that create a 'dusting' of chlorite. Since Zadzi mentioned she had already soaked the piece in oxalic, I'm pretty sure this color is chlorite  included in the quartz.

I guess we'll see... I wish I had a saw to look inside.
House Creek is fantastic, I haven't been able to find access to a solid area there as I've been getting to know the area still, but today I finally found a place to play   Grin Some nice little pieces which are getting cleaned up this weekend.
Thanks again for helping ID this, there's so much stuff out there, it's definitely a lot to learn.
