Over the past year I have been learning to polish stones and haven't been searching for new and unusual items a lot.

Here are some that have me baffled and any suggestions are welcomed please.

First  - unknown- (3 views) 2 front 1 back pic

Second-  Metallic Silver stones, very dense (very heavy for their size, see photo comparison - first stone is 'reg.' and second is the metallic stone) and they are attracted to a magnet.

Hey Daniegirl, Good to hear from you. Glad to hear you're doing some polishing. Smiley
I'll be happy to throw out some guesses to think about.
The first one is a very nice gnarly rock. Looks like a layer of sandstone with a thin 'gnarly' looking layer of silica, or chalcedony, exposed. The silica layer can be included with other minerals like iron oxides to give it the red-brown color. If that silica layer was a couple of inches thick you'd have a 'seam agate', maybe. I think it's mainly unusual because of the way the whole seam is exposed instead of seeing just an edge exposed.

I'll guess that the black crystals in your shiny silver pieces are weathered magnetite, and that's where the magnetism is coming from, and the silver matrix is a galena/mica schist?
I can see how they would catch your eye!

As always, I reserve the right to make up all sorts of excuses for being completely wrong. Cheesy

Well, good enough, Daniegirl, I hope those guesses were in the ballpark.

I don't know if you hunt or collect Indian Artifacts or not but I was talking with someone else from the Show-Me state recently about what some of the different local Missouri rock was used Prehistorically by the Native Americans and came across a couple of good sources for information.
This first one has some good general info;
www.projectilepoints.net/Materials/Search/Missouri.html

But this one has all kinds of information a rockhound could use,
and if you click on the '' Fact Sheet 3'' Map listed in the introduction it says you have Petrified Palm Wood near you.
