Creek Find - Johnston County

Yesterday was the first day of my winter vacation that I was able to make it out to the creek. While I was out there I found this well worn banded dark gray/whitish stone.

I have a suspicion, but I would like confirmation.

Other information: scratches glass, scratched by quartz. Not UV reactive. Whitish streak on streak plate. Not magnetic.

Tell me what you think.

Happy New Year, April! Hope you're having a good day!
Yes, it's nice that it's warmed enough to go out and play! Smiley

Thank you for showing everyone the correct way to post a specimen for identification by including as much information as you can about it and a good picture. Well done! Smiley
I'm going to guess it's a small water-rounded cobble of smoky quartz with white lines running through it. I'm sure you've seen larger pieces of it. Yes, some quartz will scratch other quartz.

If you aren't sure, cut that egg in two and we'll see! Wink

My first thought when I picked up this stone was that is could be a dark feldspar. I have a black moonstone with very similar patterns to what the stone looked like. The lack of 90 degree angles was what threw me.

I took your advice and cut it open. And dang, even as smoky quartz, that was not what I was expecting inside!

Well, Yeah, that yellow is a bit of a surprise! Smiley
That's kind of pretty. If it weren't for the fractures that would be nice enough to see what a cab looks like. The yellows are probably caused by iron oxides caught in the quartz.
Keep on hunting and thanks for the pictures!

I need to go find a first-day-of-2023 rock. Cool
