I found this at my job where I park at. I thought the striations were interesting and tumbled some of it. I think it's sedimentary yet it held up okay in the tumbler and got shiny. Any ideas of what exactly it is?

That did polish up nice!
Yep that's some of our local 'squeezed by Africa' rock. All the planes in the rock line up with the black line, or vise-versa, because it's been squeezed with lots of pressure. It's hard to come up with a "name" for the rock because it is a mixture of minerals but read up on the formation of "Quartzite" and "Sandstone".

Aha! Thanks for the info. With this area being a tad south of the Appalachians that makes a lot of sense and that rock is very old. I do love the stripes on these rocks.

I'd probably call that a gneiss.
