Very cool. It looks like it could be sodalite. Usually that's a stone that is seeded into sluicing operations at gem mines throughout NC.  Curious where you found this?

It looks most like sodalite to me too but just to play devil's advocate could it be blue quartz? An article I found mentions the blue color might be due to rutile inclusions. I looked up rutile on Mindat and it's all over the Ashville area but this does confuse me personally, all the pics I've seen of rutile are red-brown-gold. Maybe someone with more experience than me can explain that though, is it some light-refraction shenanigans?

There are two places in that ~rough area~ that mention blue quartz on mindat.

I found the pic I posted from a seller on etsy who says it's blue quartz from the blue ridge mountains. Obviously I can't confirm or deny, it also looks like sodalite to me  Grin

This pic from mindat for blue quartz also looks pretty similar. https://www.mindat.org/photo-258954.html

Good Morning, Alina, Very Good, I was wondering the same thing only I was talking about it on SouthernMaples' other Asheville, NC thread.

Sodalite versus Blue Quartz.
I believe a fluorescence test would help answer the question.
The piece SM found in the driveway looks more like Sodalite to me than the blue quartz. Your picture from Mindat looks like the blue quartz I've seen from around here. Very fractured and reconstituted looking. It is a very old rock, 700 million or older, so it shows it's age. I've added some pictures of a piece I have below.
There are several rocks, minerals, or quartz colored this blue by inclusions of Rutile. Dumortierite for one. And, yes, I believe there is some sort of light-refraction shenanigans going on but that is way past my pay grade to explain. Tongue
The piece SM found in the driveway looks more like Sodalite than the Blue Quartz to me, but if it is Sodalite, and I'm doubting it, how'd it get there?
And exactly where did the gravel in that driveway come from?
Lots of questions Smiley

Joe,

That is a pretty rock!

Is it that conglomerate/fractured look the quartz has that makes you think SouthernMaple's rock is different?

Not debating just asking to file that info away for future use.  Grin

I appreciate all the info!
Alina

Well, yes, Alina. Smiley
SM's rock is fractured too, but just looks to be a little different composition from the Blue Quartz. A little less fractured and a darker blue. Maybe just because it is a smaller piece?  I have always thought it was a piece of the local Blue Quartz and have just been trying to eliminate the Sodalite question because it's a good question. Wink

I see I see, I've never been the best at subtext. At least I learned that quartz here can be blue.  Smiley
