Eastern/Central Kentucky Trip

I don't know how formatting works very well here yet so I might split this up into multiple posts in the thread to keep pics organized.

We took a trip in Eastern/Central KY last week and I'm just getting around to taking stock and pictures of our stuff, work is always getting in the way of the REAL IMPORTANT TASKS Cheesy.

Our main destination was Mammoth Cave National park but all my favorites were found at a couple of spots along the way. Geodes and fossils were my hope.

We ended up with 2 really nice and big, complete geodes plus many fragments of ones that cracked naturally or were other peoples' trash (But my treasure.) One of the complete geodes we found my bf's mom actually kicked like a soccer ball, joking and me "Yes! That's exactly what we're looking for!" Our rockhounding spots were a little limited by time and accessibility but I think I got some good prospects for next time.  Smiley

We did find some fossils too, as far as I know they're mostly inverts leftover from bits of the tropical ocean floor that covered KY (And most of NA) around 3.5 million years ago. Spoilers it's mostly crinoid bits lol. The same oceans that created the caverns that gave Mammoth Cave its name housed these little guys. I'll post the pics of fossils I found over in that thread just to keep things organized.

Mammoth Cave was awesome too, you need to book a tour in advance (They sell out) to go inside the cave but it was worth it. The gift shop sells geodes and I felt so smug having a couple I found in my car.  Grin

This little fragment we found was already cracked open, I said it looked just like a little tea light holder. Sure enough they fit pretty well! I don't know if we'll ever light one in it but it sure does look pretty!

I was calling these "Overachieving geodes" but I think they'd be considered agate? I've seen pics of Kentucky Agate and they're much prettier than this but that might be confirmation bias, cause who's taking pics of ugly agate. (Me, it's me.)

I'm going to try polishing some of these up just to see what happens. I've got my patented Ten Dollar Polisherâ„¢ from Harbor Freight I'm going to start playing with.  Grin

I forgot to add, I'm still working on cleaning some of these geodes out. I've got Iron Out and that works well enough for stuff around here usually, but the stuff from KY doesn't seem to react as well. I've been using a medium wire brush and my WaterPik (To be frank I care more about rocks than dental hygiene anyway.)

If anyone's got any tips on ways to get the really clustered crystals cleaner without damaging them too much I'd love to hear any tips. Some shedding has been happening and some crystal bits are loose when we crack the geodes open, we've been keeping the "Crystal confetti" for a future project.

Awesome Field Trip Report, Alina! Smiley Thank You!
Sounds like you had a great time, and it sounds like you've got the "Rock Bug" bad, which is a Good thing!
Well done on your first report. The way you figured out to do it is the same way I do it. A little bit of text and a few pictures with each post.

Glad to hear Mammoth Caves is still there! I grew up in Iowa and barely remember our family trip there in the 1960's. Great place to grow up but as Mom would often lament, "It's just so far from 'anything'.  Grin
Anyway, Love all the pretty crystal geodes and I'm glad you already know about Iron Out. You can try soaking hard to clean specimens more than once, 2-3 days at a time with a good rinse and spray inbetween, but sometimes the colors are going to be included in the quartz and just won't come out.
Now those "Geode Overachievers"( Cheesy), are a different animal. The first one you have pictured, sliced open, may be an agate, and, because of the little hollow cavity in the middle, is definitely a geode. But all the rest of your samples are a type of Chert Nodule called "Hornstone". Some people call them flint nodules. Very good material for knapping found in Kentucky and Tennessee.

Thank you again for the report!
