Found this specimen in New Mexico.  It had a waxy look and feel. The outside looks like tree bark a nail doesn't scratch and translucent. Agate maybe

Yes. I would guess a section of a vein or layer of agate or chert.
There are a lot of rocks out there that look like "some sort of" petrified wood. Good eye.
