Hope you had a good Thanksgiving and Welcome to the rockhounding hobby! Smiley
You can't very well tell what a rock is by looking at a picture without asking some questions first. Like "where did it come from?",and  "what is the hardness?"
What do you think it is?
Maybe a picture of it backlit would help?

Yes Joe looks similar to some of the corundum (Rubies) I find here at Treasure Valley.

One obvious key to knowing if it's corundum without doing any tests is if it feels heavy compared to other rocks that size.  Corundum is heavy.
