I was cleaning some rocks found a while ago in Girard, and found these- I was thrilled to see these! The urchin and shell are easy for me to identify, but the rounded mass of similar size and shape is more mysterious.

Good finds, rob, thanks for the pictures.
Real interesting "urchin" fossil. Might be able to ID the species from that grid pattern? Nice specimen but crazy looking thing.
You're right, looks like there's something there in that pile but I can't tell you what! A coral, or bryozoan, or sponge?
And don't forget Diatoms! I've been reading some on the Diatom/Chert Connection. Google "Diatoms on Chert rock" for some interesting info on chert in general.

The unidentified thing appears to me to have a conglomeration of five sided what ever they are. They soak up water and dry fast so I am assuming they are porous. Also, it is not reactive to muriatic acid, unlike the side of my pinky. I did not notice the little hole in my glove.
More detective work needed! And thanks Scott! Thanks Joe! Y'all should come down and do some digging!
