The local Tar Heel Gem and Mineral Club made it to the
Martin Marietta Haw River Quarry this past Saturday. It was
the first time our club had ever been there so we weren't
sure what we were looking for, but it was a beautiful day
and a great opportunity. In our four hours we were barely
able to scratch the surface but hope to make a return
visit sometime later this year.
Zeolites like stilbite and chabazite and epidote crystals
turned out to be the hidden treasures of the day, but
there were also pretty little well formed pyrite crystals
and chalcopyrite in an array of colors.
The Gold.
And very pretty little Red cubes. The next two pics are of
the same specimen with red cubes on an epidote crystal.
We found nice specimens of Stilbite and Chabazite, but
ofcourse need to go back for better ones. Here are a
couple of pics of the same Chabazz specimen.
Will try to post a pic of the Stilbite soon, but I can't wait
to get back there and do some more hunting.
