Scott, I don't think there is evidence of it being ferroan dolomite, but just plain ol' ordinary dolomite, but I haven't seen the analysis yet.  The iron contained within the limonite didn't necessarily come from the dolomite, but was probably precipitated out of a surrounding matrix or clays.  It is understandable to think the green color of much of the Crabtree and Triangle Dolomite is caused by iron, but this has not been confirmed to my knowledge.  Broken specimens reveal that the color is confined to the surface or near surface zones of the crystals.  These analysis will be published in the next year or so, then it will be cleared up.  They have also found that the Kobellite from Crabtree is not Kobellite, but 2 or 3 even rarer species, including a brand new species!  Kenny wanted them to name it Crabtreeite, but they are going with a boring chemical name.  I'll keep you posted as I learn more.

No, problem, I'll label them dolomite until or unless further research determines differently.

Thanks NCGrampa.  Although color and chemical make up are very similar (spinel: MgAl2O4, corundum: Al2O3) these are not spinel as the habit of spinel is cubic or octahedral.

Take a look at some examples in the photo gallery for spinel at mindat: http://www.mindat.org/min-3729.html

@ Raleigh Rockhound -- scale is roughly one inch across for field of view.

Old eyes here Scott, couldn't tell, but thought they were corundum.  As you know, little of the corundum down in this area has that pure, pure ruby color and clarity (though I have a few  Smiley ).   Next time I'm exploring up in that area, I'll try get a look in person.
