Virgin Burgin Mine

Sunday, Sept. 25, 2011
We entered and descended upon the Burgin Mine outside
of Norwood, in Stanley Co., NC, for the first time.

The Fall MAGMA Glendon Dig had been the day before, and
after a great relaxing get together and dinner hosted by Laurie
Adams, we followed his lead Sunday morning and picked up
a few more folk at the Bojangles in town on the way to the
site. It was another perfectly comfortable overcast morning
without much chance of rain. Great digging weather!

Our initial view of the site and sign-in, and it didn't take
long for everyone to spread out and get down to business.

Jesse and Luther are looking at a vug in a huge boulder
of quartz.
Scott has found himself a nice little vug in a pretty big
piece of quartz, too. Smiley
Last pics are of Scott's vug and another one next to it,
and a couple of the completely healed shards or tabbies
that were being found in most of these pockets.

Everyone is pretty much going Vug-Crazy!

Tracey and I thought trying to move a couple of quartz
"baby-boulders" because we were sure there was something
behind them was a good idea.

Jesse getting more advice on how to get to that vug he's
working on and what they are looking at.

Meanwhile back at the ranch........Tracey was RIGHT!
There was probably the nicest pocket found of the day
behind that rock! And she found it!

There's no better way to break a site in than with a MAGMA Dig.
It was a great first day at the Burgin Mine and we want to
thank Mr. Burgin for allowing us on his property and giving
us the opportunity to do what we love to do most!

So Scott and I made it down to Burgin last Saturday, Feb. 25,
for the SFMS Invitational.
I thought I'd add the trip pics onto this thread so maybe
you can see the progress the diggers are making. There
has been a considerable amount of digging going on at
the mine, but there's still a whole lot left to do. And Mr. Burgin
said when we finish with this hill, he'll just have to find another
one for us to dig in! Smiley

It was perfect digging weather. Beautiful sunny day in the
50's, and about 50 folks showed up to dig.
The pockets are still popping out everywhere and I'm really
starting to enjoy picking thru them and looking for the most
perfect odd healed floater. I'll go back about any chance
I get. Wink

Here are some pics of the place now;

Yep, and the next thing you know, we're about the last
to leave. Looks like all Scott needs is a pillow. Smiley

I was going to follow a big thick seam of pocket clay down
between to massive boulders of quartz, but as I was clearing
the area to go down I discovered a pocket in the side of
one of the boulders. I spent most of the morning cleaning
the pocket out, and didn't get into another one for the rest
of the day.
Here's a couple of pics of the pocket almost completely
cleaned out. There's a little of the pocket left in these pics
to the left of the blue digging stick. You can see a thin
layer of bright white clay lining the very bottom of the pocket.
The last pic is of some of the "crystals" that came from
this pocket. I will try and post some close-up pics of some
of what I think are the nicer ones later.
(Probably much later. Roll Eyes)

Joe, My son David and I were there too.  We spent most of the day digging between the bigger boulder on th side of the hill and cracking and prying around a few vugs.  Later in the day we got out the sledge hammer and found a few nice faces and poind inside a boulder.  Great day to dig in the dirt and hit things with hammers!

Great pictures!

Joe the pics look great.  That line up of cars and trucks and all the folks on the site, it looks like the mine was under attack. Thanks for sharing your pics. Cheesy

Thanks, John. Wink

Sorry we missed you, Grampa. Or did we?
There were three earlybirds there when we arrived, and I
believe one of them was a David. We spoke briefly and if I
remember right he said they were from the Roanoke club.
But I know how it is; When you're there to Dig, that's what
you do. Wink
The Burgin is a great place to work on your digging skills.
If you want to work on your "Finding" skills, you may want
to try someplace else. Smiley
Seriously tho, I have fallen in love with some of the little
completely healed floaters found in the pockets there.
There were easily a hundred in that one pocket I found that
day, but most of them will end up in the Grab Bags for the
club show. But, there were about a dozen that I will keep
and that I think are worth the effort digging for. Heck, it's
more work at home cleaning them all up than the digging!

Oh well, Glad to hear you were there and maybe we'll be
digging next to you next time.
We even had our RockHoundLounge T-shirts on, but you
wouldn't have seen them till it got warmer about mid-morning.

Joe

Joe, we are from the Gaston Gem, Mineral and Faceters Club.  David and I have done most of our digging on private land and are just getting into the "group dig" thing.  We also do a bit of gold grubbing.

I agree; it was fun and we got a lo of interesting stuff, mostly just faces and not a lot of well formed crystals.  I also see what you mean about "healed" crystals.  It adds character to the pieces.

Hope to see you soon.

One more trip to the Burgin Mine, Saturday, April 14, 2012.

This visit was blessed by a good omen to begin with. The first
few to arrive were able to watch this Mare giving birth
to its' foal. Yep, she just dropped it out on the ground there
where it was when Scott and I arrived, fashionably late as usual.
