Pyrite and who knows what else....

Let me try to set the stage here, my wife and I travel from Covington, VA to Durham, NC often, we exit VA from Danville, pick up 86 and then get onto I-40 to CH/Durham.
Between I-85 and I-40 ON Rt 86, they are doing some road construction...YES, dynamite was involved!! There is a pull-off and lay down area that I parked in, access is no problem...
Week before last we were in town (yours) and I decided on  Saturday to head over to the construction site, just to walk around and see what was showing. I picked up a couple of pieces of really clear quartz that I will put on the lapidary wheel.
I also ran into a field of pyrite obviously exposed by the major disruption of applied boom. I only covered about 1/3 of the area and picked up a couple of chunks, some with smallish (1/4") pyrite cubes and another piece that looks like a cavity in the matrix was filled with molten pyrite.
I took pics of the site, no really I did!!...and as soon as I can get some decent pics of the pieces I gathered, I will be posting...
Also?? Across Rt 86, almost directly across from the site mentioned above, UNC is constructing a new hospital facility and they have several acres disturbed. My wife was pretty tolerant of my foray onto the road construction site...she drew the line when she realized I might go "walkabout" so needless to say, I ventured "not"....if anybody happens to journey that way???  I really don't want to know what I missed......

how old would you be if you didn't know how old you are?

Hey Mobjack, Sounds interesting, Thanks for the heads-up!
I'm pretty booked up Saturday, and it might rain, but that
would be good for doing a little surface hunting Sunday
morning. I'd still like to see any pics you have but I might just
head that way Sunday and check it out.
Don't worry, if I find anything good I won't tell you about it. Wink

That might be the best part of you, Joe.  Smiley

Sounds like an excellent adventure. Why aren't people tolerant of our "walkabouts" anyway? Angry

Great report.  The pyrite is very interesting and something I did not know about in that vicinity.  Thanks for taking the time to let us know.   Smiley

I agree, Scott. I was hoping to get up there yesterday and
take a look around but we spent too much time in House Creek.
Maybe next weekend.
