"Carolina 6 Pack" Quiz
Aug 2nd, 2012 at 7:15pm
Print Post
It's been a while since I've tried to stump y'all.  I am posting photos of six North Carolina specimens for y'all to identify.  Give me the name of the mineral species prominently displayed; the locality (mine), and county.  If an associated mineral is nearly as prominent you can identify that, too.  You do not need to identlfy the matrix, unless it is a prominent mineral, like muscovite.

The quiz ends Saturday at midnight, so I will reveal the answers sometime Sunday morning.  Are you ready?

Thanks for posting this, Dennis.
Looks very interesting. But I, for one, think it would be good if
you could give us a little more time to work on it and extend
the time limit. Not that it will help this one, but might atleast
give me a chance. Wink

No problem, Joe.  I'll wait until you and others have a chance to look at the pics closely and give answers.  I will admit that some are very difficult, except for #6, so I will give some clues for each specimen later tonight.

How about if we end the quiz at Midnight on Friday, August 10?  That's a full week for researching and guessing.

Okay, so I got impatient and decided to give clues to help with the identification of the specimens.  I will post additional clues as the days progress, if they prove to be too difficult to ID.

Here are the clues:

1.  This mineral is rare in NC, having only been reported from two localities, according to Mindat.org.

2.  The two main minerals that make up this specimen are fairly common in NC.  No, it is not from Wake Co., Scott!  This specimen came from a very popular and often visited mine, and it makes me blue to think that is now closed.

3.  I found this specimen at the type locality while on a geology class field trip when I attended Western Carolina University.  (If that's not a big hint, I don't know what is!)

4.  This specimen needs no clue, but here goes.  I found it at a famous NC locality that was once the main US source of a special element that makes up the mineral.

5.  Mindat.org records this mineral from only one NC locality (now closed).

6.  Like #4, this specimen should require no clue.  So, I will not give one at this time.

Good luck,

Dennis

Here's my wild guesses:

1. Augite, Cranberry Mine, Avery Co.
2. Almandine Garnet, Balsam Mica Mine, Yancy Co.
3. Asbestos, somewhere in Jackson Co.?
4. British Monazite Mine, Shelby, NC  http://dc.lib.unc.edu/cdm/singleitem/collection/nc_post/id/3240
5. Looks like wavellite, but I'm seeing two localities in NC on mindat -- I'm stumped on this one too.
6. Corundum, Probst Farm, Lincoln Co.

Scott,

Those were all great guesses.  You correctly identified the minerals for #2 and #6, and the county for #3.  So try again.  I don't think I've ever seen Augite, and #4 does resemble Monazite.  (I've lost the only Monazite specimen that I owned, and am trying to add another to my collection)

I will wait until Joe and others weigh in, then I'll add more clues, if needed.  I knew most of these would be difficult and require a little research.  Good luck.

I knew I was going to need more time, Dennis.
Haven't had a chance to research any of this yet using your clues.
I thought Augite was a good guess on #1 considering it's
rarity in the state, but since it ain't I'll make a stab at just
that one for now and guess Black Corundum. I've heard of a
couple of locations for it in South Carolina but can't find any
definite spots listed for NC, so will have to further guess
Corundum Hill, Macon Co.,NC.

Another good guess, Joe.  But it isn't corundum.  Number 6 is corundum as Scott identified.  As a matter of fact, there are no duplicate species in the quiz, all are different.

Number 1 is by far the most difficult to identify.  Here are the original clues with an additional clues added.  I will continue to add clues until they are identified.

#1.  This mineral is rare in NC, having only been reported from two localities, according to Mindat.org.  It was described in Norway in 1824, and occurs with zeolite minerals.

#2.  The two main minerals that make up this specimen are fairly common in NC.  No, it is not from Wake Co., Scott!  This specimen came from a very popular and often visited mine, and it makes me blue to think that is now closed.  The mine is found past a small waterfall.  Oh yeah, lookout for trip wires and hidden cameras (partially kidding)!

#3.  I found this specimen while on a geology class field trip when I attended Western Carolina University.  (If that's not a big hint, I don't know what is!)  Sorry, my mistake.  This mine is not the mineral's type locality.  It is a ferroan variety of a common pyroxene group mineral found in dunite bodies.  Take a close look at the color.

#4.  This specimen needs no clue, but here goes.  I found it at a famous NC locality that was once the main US source of a special element that makes up the mineral.  This mineral was once found in lesser amounts at other NC mines, especially Cabarrus Co.  It helped make the world a brighter place.

#5.  Mindat.org records this mineral from only one NC locality (now closed).  It is a rare copper phosphate hydroxide mineral, described 1823.

#6.  Like #4, this specimen should require no clue.  So, I will not give one at this time.  This color variety was prized from this locality (closed for 20+ years) due to its incredible asterism.

Keep guessing.  Good luck.

Great quiz and clues, Dennis!
Yes, it has about driven me crazy so I need to make some
WAG's before I spend anymore time on it.
Here goes nothing. Smiley

1. Babingtonite, Lenoir Quarry, Caldwell Co.

2. Andradite var. Melanite, Henson Creek, Mitchell Co.
    courtesy John Frazier. Wink

3. This one is really tough because you can't tell much from
the picture. We know it is from Jackson Co. Tremolite is
too common, so I'm guessing Antigorite, but will be
    looking/waiting for more clues. Wink

4. Huebnerite, Hamme Mine, Vance Co.

5. Really wanted to call this Pseudomalachite or even
Chalcosiderite, but the 1823 date and an article about
Steve Adams identifying this mineral clinched it.
    Libethenite, Clegg Mine, Lee Co.

6.  Scott called the mineral and my WAG on a location is
     Mincey Mine, Macon Co.

I'll be patiently waiting for more clues. Wink

Slightly revised guesses in red:

1. Babingtonite, Martin Marrietta Quarry, Catawba Co.
2. Almandine Garnet, Spruce Pine, Mitchell Co.
3. Enstatite var. Bronzite, mine??, Jackson Co.
4. Tungsten, Hamme Mine or "Tungsten Queen" Vance Co.
5. Looks like wavellite, but I'm seeing two localities in NC on mindat -- I'm stumped on this one too.
6. Corundum, mine?? Franklin Co.

Joe/Scott:

Great tag team effort and great sleuthing. You nearly nailed all six.

Here are the answers to the quiz with some comments:

1. Babingtonite; Martin Marietta Quarry (11th Street Quarry), Hickory, Catawba Co., NC.

Joe guessed the mineral and Scott got the locality.

2.  Black Almandine Crystals in Muscovite; Meeper Mine (Walker Creek Kyanite site), Buncombe Co., NC.

Scott guessed the mineral, but both were off on the locality.  I was sure the clues would have helped, because the waterfall reference was Walker Falls mentioned in Rick's book.  Also, the blue reference and security clue should have tipped you off, since the Forest Service has cameras mounted around the mine.

3.  Enstatite var. Bronzite; Webster Deposit, Webster, Jackson Co., NC.

Scott got the mineral and county correct.

4.  Huebnerite in quartz; Hamme Tungsten Mine, Tungsten, Vance Co., NC.

Joe got the mineral and was first to get the locality.

5.  Libethenite; Clegg Mine, Lee Co., NC.

Joe got this one correct.

6.  Corundum var. Bronze Sapphire; Mincey Mine, Ellijay, Ellijay District, Macon Co., NC.

Scott got the mineral and Joe guessed the locality.

You guys are up on your NC minerals, and know where to find the info needed to identify them.  I'll do another quiz in a couple of weeks if there's interest.

Cool Beans, Dennis. That was fun!
And, ofcourse, very educational. Smiley
Never could have done it without all your clues.
Thank you for going to the time and trouble and yes,
I think we'll be up for another one when you get around to it. Wink
Can't believe we missed all the clues about Walker Creek!

Guys this was way above my pay grade.  I knew one of the minerals (#6) and guessed at another after a little web research (#4) but locations?  Forget about it!  Even though I was too dumb to participate, I have to say that was a lot of fun just to watch and follow and also a great education.  Thank you Dennis for posting this.  Great Job Joe and Scott!

Thanks for the quiz Dennis. I probably learned more about rocks in the research for your quiz than I have in a few years.  Of course without mindat I would have been completely lost.  I look forward to the next opportunity of rock knowledge advancement!   Grin
