Emerald never fails to elicit a giddy response.  Grin
I still have a Crabtree cab from Joe from years ago that I cherish.

I will take pics soon (and you guys are in trouble because I finally got a Dinolite!!!!!!), but the sun is out and it is Friday!  Grin

I second that trip JMB!  It's been a long time since I've gone there, and green is my favorite color!   Cheesy

Some cabbing material.
The whole crystal on the edge in the first picture is loose.

And now for something even more exciting...
Could this be massive golden beryl?

Great pictures, Rebecca. Are those taken with the dinolite?
Good job! It's nice to see those old pieces, and you do have some nice beryls hidden in there. They haven't changed a whole lot in the last 10 years.  Wink  But I understand. There is nothing easy about preparing a specimen or working this material.  Tongue
Like that last "cab" piece. It's full of emeralds! What are you going to do with it? Tough decisions and meticulous work. Since that one emerald on the edge is all ready loose go ahead and pull it off but don't throw it away. I'll take it off your hands and see if I can do anything with it. Cheesy

There could be golden beryl somewhere in that clump, but it's not all golden beryl. I believe it's mostly quartz that has been stained by iron and other minerals. I don't know why the quartz forms all those compacted "crystals" or what dictates their shape. Some of the clump looks "melted". I remember those clumps were good to break apart and look for beryl, garnet, and some of the other minerals. Maybe someone can shine some more light on those formations.
Thanks for the pics!

Thanks Joe. The camera is a Nikon DX something something that I have had for years. The dinolite is in place and rocks and pics are a flying'! I have to do more organizing because I hope to get info on the big picture with the agate/jasper stuff. I think it is all occurring on a fault line. Also I am pining for Spring and green is keen!
The emerald that is loose is really pretty with little tourmalines attached and needs to be free!
I would love to cab this stuff but right now I am still just grinding stuff to dust, so I will wait till I can figure out what I am doing wrong. Plus those emeralds look like they are going to pop off! Cabbing is not so relaxing it seems.
I have thought about busting open this little golden mass, but each time I can't bring myself to do it.

Yes there are other colors of beryl at the Crabtree. Sometimes in the same crystal.

Yes, it looks like it's time to go thru the old Crabtree rock pile. Smiley
I didn't spend 30 hours etching and exposing the first specimen pictured, but I did spend about 10. There was just a little tiny glimmer of the good green end sticking thru the mica when I began with pick and Dremel with diamond burrs. The crystal is one half by one quarter inch and I left a quartz rest at the back so the top wouldn't pop off.

that is a HOT chunk of emerald sitting on top there! How big is that?
That is a nice specimen in the end with the bi-color....is that a term? One that would apply here for color? Why would that occur? A different saturation of chromium or the mineral that makes the color?

Nice photos, Joe.

I, too, like the last pic with the bicolored beryl crystal.  I'm no geologist, mineralogist, or chemist, but just an ordinary fan of the beryl group.  Looking at the specimen, it appears that during crystallization there was a concentration of Cr in the central part of the slurry that was taken up in the crystal lattice during formation making it an emerald.  As the crystal grew farther from the center, the Cr decreased and Fe increased to give it a creamy yellow color.  Additional Fe would have made this part of the crystal a full blown golden beryl (Heliodor in gemologist terms).
