almandine garnet

I found it just laying on the ground. Nickel is for size reference. I would like to clean up to show it's color. It came from an area that had sulphur mines so that's why it's orange looking. Any advice on what to do leave it be or clean it up. I have tried up CLR on it

Nice.  Here is one in matrix (After some cleaning) I found last month in Marshall. This is about the size of a silver dollar at its widest.

I didn't use anything but elbow grease on mine.  My son used oxalic acid on his with some success.  Some areas turned yellow on the garnets from the acid treatment.

Very nice garnet pictures.  I like how the crystal faces are very well defined.

Thanks, Scott.

Brian these are just a very fraction of what I found and some of them look like they could be cut.   These were found at the Little Pine Garnet Mine in Marshall which is a pay site. You can check it out on the web.

Hi,

Good pics - interesting rocks.

Are any of your garnets magnetic?  I thought I had collected some, but they didn't budge a bit when I exposed them to a strong magnet.  In my reading, it appears you have to have a special 'neodymium magnet'.  Anyone know anything about this?

cheers,

Yes, Gramps, good pics of those nice garnets you found!
Thanks for posting them.
I have been meaning to try cabbing more of the ones I have from there.
There are some "more gemmy" areas to be found in them and I'm sure you could
come up with a few nice cabs if you sat down and tried a few, or a dozen.

Going to have to read up on that neodymium magnet, L82Play. Wink

Hey guys and girls,

Once I read garnets with higher iron content were more magnetic, I thought with all the iron/rusty rocks in the creek - surely I have garnets with high iron content.  So, I got to thinking why not drag a magnet to see what it collected.

My first test was to see if the small garnets I thought I had were magnetic and they weren't!?

I drug my strong magnet anyway and didn't get anything but small black hair-like particles.  No wonder no one collects garnets this way!!!  Yep-it would be too easy.

So I read some more and came across the neodymium magnet.  If it really attracts garnets, I'd like to get one and drag it through the rock beds and stream but maybe the attraction is not strong enough.  It's an interesting read.

Just call me LAZY L82Play.  Cheesy

Let me know what you find.

Yes it worked I would love to drag one where I found mine at. It would be interesting to see along with all the magnitite crystals you might find

Thanks,

Hummm now - 2 NOs and 1 YES - what can we conclude? Two-thirds of garnets are not magnetic?

Here's a site with a lot of magnet questions answered.

http://www.kjmagnetics.com/FAQ.asp

and I'm buying one of these big NEODYMIUM MAGNETS...

http://www.kjmagnetics.com/proddetail.asp?prod=ZD10

Stay tuned for more data...

I have a lot of experience with neodymium magnets and have many of them myself.  I painstakingly dismantled over a hundred computer hard drives that were going to be trashed so I could collect the neodymium magnets from within.  I have also purchased several online as well.

I just wanted to warn you about that big honker your buying.  That size of magnet will do a lot of damage to yourself without the utmost care and vigilance.  If your pinky gets in the way between that magnet and an iron plate or another magnet you could lose the tip of your pinky.  If you let it snap onto another magnet or piece of iron, well the speed at which it connects many times will send shrapnel flying potentially an eye hazard.  Neodymium magnets are very brittle and so thats why they break easily.  If you already knew all this than sorry for preach'n, just don't want to see you get hurt assuming you didn't understand just how powerful a magnet your actually getting there.  If your goal is only just test rock samples then you most certainly do not need a magnet of that size and power -- wayyyyyy over kill.  Just my 2 cents.   Wink

Hi,

As Tim 'The Tool Man' Taylor would say back in the day: uuuuuuuuAHaaaaaaaroohooooooogh Power!!! I am man, hear me roar!!!

But no I didn't know that - thanks for the heads-up - luckily I wasn't able to convince my wife how bad I needed it yet so we haven't ordered it.  Thanks for the warning  Shocked

If you have a surplus-do you want to sell any?  I wanted to drag the creek plus wanted to try putting some out like a fishing trot (throw) line whenever the creek is on the rise. I probably would guess I need to buy a dozen or so.  Let me know.

Thanks, again - always happy to hear your advice. Cool

Cheers,
