Here's a nice smoky crystal I found in Raleigh recently.

I know that had to put a smile on her face! Smiley

And just for the record, I didn't get completely skunked my last time out smokey hunting
with Scott and B last week. Wink

Actually I'm posting pics of this crystal configuration to illustrate yet another question. Roll Eyes
We have found schorl on some quartz in the area so I have been looking at some of the black areas
on this new smokey material as such. But now that I take a closer look at some of the pieces with "schorl"
I have found I have to take a closer look.
As an example, here are some more pics of the above crystal showing a concentration area of black material
bottom center of the piece.

At a quick glance the surface striations can make you think schorl,
but the layering looks like Ilmenite..........or Rutile?
Here are pics of a different small piece I picked up because I thought it was showing schorl.
This one may be schorl,....but I got a big nagging uncertainty about it.
First a top view, then two side.

Very strange, I've not seen tabular schorl before.  So indeed it does make me think it's something other than schorl.  I believe the last group of pictures are schorl but not sure about first group where you can see the tabular formation.

Possibly soak it in iron out if not already, and maybe we can get some better light penetration into the crystal to see its color.

4.5 x 4 x 2.5 cm

Here is a beautiful tessin habit cluster of three with light hints of smoky.

Josh found a spectacular pocket while we were both hunting one day and he split his pocket with me. This was the best crystal I pulled from his pocket. Thanks Josh!
