Hello from NC!

My name is Emily and I live near Concord, North Carolina. I am married to a gamer and I am always trying to get him outside in some sunshine. He enjoys the hiking, camping (provided it's below 75* out) and getting out of the house when I finally convince him. Inevitably, we somehow come home with a rock or two and we have quite a haphazard collection going. Recently, I suggested let's just make this an official hobby and learn more about it. We are in the information gathering stage and whew there's a lot out there. I'm trying to plan a trip up around Little Switzerland just to get our toes wet.

Hey Emily. Welcome to the Board! Smiley
Little Switzerland is a beautiful place to start. If you go up the mountain at Marion, there is an excellent little State museum right off the parkway at the top. It's all too much information at once, but over time, after you read it a dozen or two times, it starts to sink in. Wink
You go to the mining museum over on McKinney Mine Rd to sign-in and pay to go to the Crabtree Emerald Mine, which is great place to start!
Best of Luck and Have Fun!
Joe

Hi Emily and welcome to the Lounge.  You and your gamer husband may find it beneficial to come to my Open House on the 12th, where you can meet many like minded collectors and experts in the field.  I can send you home with boxes of free beginner specimens that you can learn from and you can glean all kinds of information about collecting localities and techniques.  Concord is not that far from my rock shop.  Details are posted above in the General Board category.

Welcome emwat! I'm also a big gamer so I can relate and am also proof that both can be done without issues. It's great that you're pulling him outside. There is no better way to increase your happiness and health. It's a great hobby that has the ability to take you across this planet through exploration while giving you a greater appreciation for geology and the world you live on.

I dunno Scott... I'm not sure playing with rocks counts as being a gamer.  Grin
