Can someone identify this material??  It's washed out train base.    I know it's imported rock not native to north Texas .

This rock will end up in my future rock garden I'd like to know exactly what it is.

The largest piece I will have to bring a wagon another time.

Hey Lance, Good to hear from you.  Smiley
Yes, that's some colorful rock and will look good in the garden!
Looks like Rhyolite to me? Not sure whether Iron or Orthoclase Feldspar is causing the pink/red color in the first piece, but the black piece looks like what we call Porphyritic Rhyo-Dacite.
If you're looking for a source for positive identification I'd look for an aggregate quarry with rhyolite.

It's not hot down there is it......... Tongue

Here's a picture of Precambrian "Thunderbird" rhyolite from west Texas from a geology website.  Looks like a close match maybe not the exact layer but same formation.

Good job.  Smiley
Yes, that rhyolite tends to be old rock. And yes, there is quite a variety in appearance even from the same outcrop. All the different patterns and mixtures makes for an interesting rock!
