Good find - surface hunting rocks!  That's when the rocks are begging to be found...

I especially like the way a good rock suddenly pops into sight looking good at first glance - immediately standing out - sometimes almost heart-stopping if its a really good rock - and that's as good as it gets at my age Grin

And its why you push on looking for the next one....

cheers,

Blue is the perfect accent color for the ilmenite.
Lovely!

I thought these two phantom crystals were interesting,
where the normally encased phantom layer is exposed near the termination,
and was wondering if anyone else had come across one like these.
You have to wonder if the outer crystal was ever completed and
broke at the phantom termination.............or not? Huh

Example # 1, 55mm x 28mm, first 3 pics
Example # 2, 33mm x 18mm, two angles

Those are very cool!
I have found one in Montgomery co.  where half of the chlorite phantom was included in the crystal, and the other half completely exposed. Strange looking piece.

There is a spot just off SR 1005 south of Troy near the Onvil community where you can find very similar quartz that has red hematite sprinkling the surface and within the crystals as well as an almost identical occurence about 2 miles away off another road. The first also has nice limonite cubes. I noticed that there are several localities south of Troy that have red hematite inclusions common on the quartz and the Chip Road site also had nice hex crystals of ilmenite.

Great pictures Joe!  That last specimen is an awesome example of that.  I also have a few specimens like that although not as good as yours.  The hematite coating obviously creates a weak spot for the higher grade and less included quartz to break away from.  Sometime in its past a stress was applied on it that was high enough to break it.  I believe that's probably what created these "unsheathed" specimens.  This behavior probably happens with any heavily included phantoms in quartz as can be seen by FireOnTheMountain's chlorite example.  I assume the outer sheath could potentially be dissolved as well.

Yes, that chlorite phantom is a good comparison to the
hematite phantoms.
I was thinking we'd better stick a nicely included phantom in here for comparison as well,
so here's a vermicular chlorite included phantom from Coopers Ridge.
First a front view and a close-up of the phantom.
Last pic is a side view close-up of the "faden-like" base we
find on some of the crystals from here.

Going thru some tail-ends from Coopers Ridge I found this little beauty.
Green and white vermicular chlorite and speclarite in the same phantom crystal. Cool
The whole piece is a little over an inch long.
The last pic is a close-up of the "floor" of the crystal as seen in Pic 3.
I couldn't resist trying to get a better look at it. Roll Eyes

I like how the hematite phantom is like a little tent or canopy over the chlorite.
