Tar Heel Club trip to Simpson Farm
Dec 19th, 2011 at 8:18pm
Print Post
Saturday, December 17, 2011,
the Tar Heel Gem and Mineral Club were lucky enough with the
weather to make a trip to the Simpson Farm in Prospect, VA
to dig for Amethyst crystals!
It rained the night before so it was a bit muddy but all that
meant is if you didn't feel like digging there were plenty of
crystals on the surface to find if you went real slow and looked
real hard. Smiley

Here are some of the EarlyBirds taking a first look at where
they might want to dig.

Because of all the digging that has been going on here
and the rain of the previous night a large section of the
hillside was about exposed, so I decided to go ahead and
clean a profile off to get a good look at the stratigraphy of
the hillside we are digging in here.
We are obviously in a Pegmatite, the extent of which I have
no idea. Is the Pegmatite the country rock or are there other
layers there too, I am not sure about but it was nice to get
a good look at it. I was a little surprised that I did not see
the quartz vein that we have been digging in anywhere.
It might be trending more downward than into the hillside.
More digging might be necessary to answer these questions. Roll Eyes Wink

Here is "one" of Scotts' holes.
The quartz vein is in the brick red clay below the golden
brown clay in the wall. In Pic 2 Scott is holding a piece of
the quartz vein and there are small crystal points in the
piece in his left hand, (but very hard to see in this pic).

I am sorry I did not take more pictures of the finds and
continued digging throughout the day, but the urge to do
a little digging for myself was too strong. Smiley
Scott may have some pics to add to this report and
hopefully we will have some good pics of specimens to post
later as well.
All I can say is this is a wonderful place to come and relax
in beautiful surroundings and dig for a day! I know everyone
had a great time and I thank all those for making the trip
to check this place out.
Many Thanks to the Simpson Family for opening up their
property for this type of activity! Hopefully we will get
back up there in the Spring.

Merry Christmas to All and Happy New Year!
Joe

I see the problem immediately. For it being a day after a fairly good rain, Scott, in that last picture, you're wayyyyyy too clean! Not enough digging!

Glad you guys got out and had what appears to be a successful trip.

A peculiar thing happened on my visit to the Simpson Farm.  Even when the majority of my focus was reserved for the purpose of digging and searching for crystals, a low and almost inaudible groaning sound compelled me to stop what I was doing.  A little disconcerted, I looked up and there it was.  Staring at me silent, but with purpose in its eyes.

It slowly turned its head and let out a long moooooooo as if to communicate with the other cows.  Others came to join the rally.

At this point I began to wonder if they had grown tired of their vegetarian lifestyles and were ripe for change.

I saw that they had surrounded my car blocking me from a quick escape.  Finally one of them spoke saying, "Give us some amethyst and we'll let you leave."  The fact that I have been able to relay this event proves that I was able to comply with their wishes.  Indeed, I found amethyst.

The veins of purple were small but the color was gorgeous.  The crystals were generally crouded, contacted, and mostly fell apart, however, it was purple and it is always to treat to find it.  I will post some of the better specimens that did not fall apart tonight.  They are small but very pretty.

These two are of the same specimen.  The first is with a white background so that the colors can show through.
