I drive over 175 miles to hunt amethyst at the Reel Mine yet in my own backyard I can find it.  Too bad it's not as easy to find here.  Recent construction on a plot in this subdivision uncovered some new crystals.  This little cluster was buried in a small pile of dirt next to a trench that was dug out for pipes.  Unfortunately, no in-situ amethyst veins were discovered.

Yes, I'd say it was one of my best finds at BG.  It will definitely be in my display case once I get around to buying one.

Scott beautiful!  Just saved the pics to study. Now you are going to need several display cases for your "Mineral Room". Smiley Smiley

I went back yesterday and followed a quartz vein I found at the perimeter of the site.  Prying a rock apart from a clay seam I found this small pocket.  I was not prepared with my array of pocket cleaning tools so I had to find twigs.  Of course every twig I found easily snapped in two when trying to clean the clay from this vug and it became very frustrating.  Eventually I was able to get enough clay out to reveal a small cluster.  I assumed immediately that it was grown into the back of the pocket and it would only be coming out in pieces as I chipped away at the base.  Fortunately, I was wrong, and it was a free floating cluster that came out whole.   Cheesy

Here is the side view of the cluster I found (above).  One of the features of Bowling Green quartz is this angle plated quartz growth.  We have found this on several pieces we have collected from this site.  Looking at it with a loop reveals micro quartz crystals covering and protruding from these plates.  Perhaps quartz pseudomorphs of a mineral or interaction with a mineral no longer present.

Now now, they all can't be amethysts...... Wink

And I know these two pieces don't count because they were surface finds, Roll Eyes
but they do have some good examples of the "angle" quartz growth.

nice piece Scott,175 to the Reel I wish my drives to go digging were that short on average I have to drive about 400 miles to be able to dig anything cool,,except for the fluorite wich is as of now all played out  Cry.Its to bad in that Bowling green location that they wont let you bring in a little track hoe.I would imagine that if a person could get into the ground a little bit better their ,that they would find some amazing specimens.

Your right, unfortunately, the spots we know the amethyst lies is either directly under a house, pavement, or a foundation that is already in place.  We are waiting on some adjacent property to be developed though, there may be amethyst there.

So far all other construction adjacent to Bowling Green has not produced.  It's as if all the amethyst is in one confined spot.  But it will not stop us from checking.  Amethyst seems to be very fickle.  I guess if it weren't it wouldn't be that sought after.
